OpenOffice equivalent of Sonar
OpenOffice(.org) lets you open and edit MS Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.). The quality of OpenOffice has gotten to the point where there's little point in getting MS Office anymore, except out of inertia. I personally haven't installed MS Office in about 10 years, and I use mostly Windows PCs. In another 10 years, I'm guessing google docs will be as powerful and easy to use as OpenOffice, so I'll switch to that. It's nice having free options! And that's what I'm wondering: is there an open-source DAW which can read Sonar projects?

I would guess a Reaper dev somewhere is looking into it, but you might have to export each track and reconstruct them on the new platform. Keep them stems!

I think the intricacies of a DAW is somewhat more subtle than a wordprocessor, but that's just my guess..

There is really only one Open Source DAW worth any attention http://ardour.org/ The new version is approaching Beta so all you X1 users might like to practice your newly learned Beta testing chops on it ;-) It doesn't import Cakewalk files I'm afraid but you could bring stems over from Sonar. You might however be interested in this: http://www.aatranslator.com.au/ Child

Thanks for the info. Have you spent much time with Ardour?
If so, in your mind what are the deficiencies?

Ardour isn't Windows compatible. Sad.

OpenOffice(.org) lets you open and edit MS Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.). curious. So, you can't create a new file? I've been meaning to check this out for use on a MAC, but since you mentioned that, I'm wondering.

timidi OpenOffice(.org) lets you open and edit MS Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.). curious. So, you can't create a new file? I've been meaning to check this out for use on a MAC, but since you mentioned that, I'm wondering. It's now known as Libreoffice, and is excellent. You can create, open and save .doc (and, I believe, .docx) and other MS format files in it and it works mostly like Office did pre ribbon control. Tripecac, I must confess I've not used Ardour 'in anger' at all. I've tinkered with it a few times but I've not gone over to it for similar reasons that I've not gone over to X1 (I don't like the workflow). Nevertheless if you are interested it is worth setting up a Linux box for (or if you have access to a Mac it will run on that too) and learning your way through it a bit. Up until now Ardour was strictly audio and it's an incredibly comprehensive, flexible and powerful audio sequencer. The burgeoning V3 will feature MIDI sequencing and, again, it looks like they're going for a very flexible / adaptable implementation. Of course all this power and flexibility also tends to mean that there's a pretty tough learning curve to beat. The other thing you have to get your head around is the use of JACK and that softsynths don't reside in the DAW but are patched in to it via JACK (which is an incredibly powerful patchbay for all the io of all audio apps on the computer, but again great power brings great complexity). Nevertheless I would urge anyone with a bit of time and inclination to have a go at using it, there are some truely excellent features and the more people who use it and feed in to the bug tracker the faster it will mature. You also have the option to make additional financial contributions to boost efforts on particular features that you would like to see in there. Child
