I've found Automap works much better than ACT, and it also takes advantage of the SL's display, so that's what I use. It is possible to switch the mode of the SL from Automap to a different control mode to use with ACT if you really want to use both, but I don't do that.
You initially have to "wrap" any VST plugins you want to use in Automap and then rescan for plugins in Sonar so that the wrapped versions show up.
Then you insert the Automap wrapped version of the plugin in the Synth Rack or FX bin. Then whenever you bring the focus to either Sonar itself, or a wrapped Automap synth or FX plugin, your SL will switch to control that automatically and show the current settings on your SL's display (make sure your SL is in Automap mode).
You will probably want to assign your individual faders, buttons, etc. on the SL to control the specific automatable parameters you want for each FX/synth on the Automap screen, and save it as the default mapping for that plugin. It will create default mappings on it's own, but usually you will want to change them.
It takes a little time to get it set up, but once you do so it works very well.
