    A. yes - I think it helps to learn other people's songs to teach me things about music.
    B. this is the biggest reason I learn other people's songs at this time.  since I'm playing and singing in a church band, we do other people's songs more than we do originals.  it could be considered similar to a "cover band."
    C. nope.  our church band is completely voluntary.  some church bands get paid, but only the ones with bigger churches.  smaller ones are typically all volunteers.
    D. I think that learning others' songs satisfies a hole in my being which can only be quenched by learning and playing music.  I often won't play it/sing it exactly like the original was recorded, however, often finding that I add an emotive substance to it that is different from the original, so I have to express it slightly differently.  a lot of "non-musicians" might not ever hear some of the differences, they may be so very subtle that only I know the difference.  but I don't emulate the song exactly and that's part of making it "mine" which is satisfying to me.

    B.

But only if it's a recording collab. I don't "play out" anymore. Haven't in something like 35 years.

    D.

My song writing ability is almost non-existant, but I love to play and record. So other people's songs are fine for me.
Why do it?  Because its FUN.

Mostly D.  I learn covers now because I like the song and think I can add my own spin to it.

    Re:Why do you 2011/09/07 12:20:10 (permalink)
    A. I've learned one song in the last few years. I'm still learning from it.
It is a Wes Montgomery tune. Everytime I play it I see something in a new way.
As a guitarist I've always felt that if a tune attracts me enough to learn it, I have to
find out what it has that pulled me in.
An issue with a tune such as this is that I must not only understand what its about but
        I must apply what I've learned....in my way...my voice.

One of the hardest things about learning a very progressive part(s) is working out the
location on the fretboard....very unlike a keyboard. One pitch on a guitar can be found in
multiple places- the timbre changes but the pitch is the same.
Timbre use to really help me hear where players were at. For those that can't relate -
a note played on an "open" string has a much different timbre than the same note(pitch)
played at different locations and strings of the instrument. Each will have it's on timbre
and sometimes it's hard to detect.
Many of the older guitarists here can relate to that from trying to learn from listening
only. We certainly didn't have the learning tools available today.

I answered my question because when I was very young and asked my parents
for a guitar (at about 6 yrs young) I wanted to learn...I wanted to hold a guitar and learn.

In the middle '80's after spending many years with B.C. and D. - A. is the only one
that matters. It was the starting reason and still continues to be the reason when all others have fell along-side the road.
