Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury

all the talk yesterday, about his 65th bday (RIP), got me thinking about Queen.

a huge influence on me early on, i 1st bought the SHEER HEART ATTACK album, then went back and bought QI and QII.....

went home and watched a dvd i picked up about a year ago...

Queen Live At The Rainbow Theatre (London) - 1974

really awesome capture of the early queen...
they had just released the SHEER HEART ATTACK album.

I went to a Queen show in the 80's. It was one of the most annoying shows I've ever seen. Queen's performance was very good. The annoying part was that the stage was a bunch of steps leading up to the drum set. On the vertical surface of each step was a row of lights aimed at the audience--and they used them liberally. I don't know how anyone could see to drive home. I'd like to say that I saw Queen, but that would be a stretch. Otherwise, it was a very good show.

In Bapu's case, I believe "UK" stands for Undershreddies Klub.  They held meetings in a treehouse near his home when he was young but never gave him the correct password...

Look it's a sad day or it was, I still remember his death although I wasn't a fan until his death (I was only 13 or 14).  He was an amazing talent, I have watched a couple of concerts on youtube in particular Live Aid, I would have like to be in command of that army like he was.  Also there was a touching 65 birthday video showing interview's and things, I've seen it all before but he could give great interveiws and well there is not much to say.

Queen is one of those bands I've sort of put aside for later I guess. I knew them through a couple of songs - don't we all - I knew there was something to it, but the timing was wrong and it just didn't click back then.

I'm getting back to it and, man, they were really something.

The same happened w/ Bowie. I had some records but just never listen from the right angle I guess. But when I finally did, he became an absolute favorite of mine.

I did that with a whole spectrum of music.  I finally figured out that, throughout my youth, I always favored bands using humbuckers with just a "seasoning" of songs from bands that used single-coil pickups.  That meant that it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I suddenly "discovered" how great lots of bands like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix really were.  It was actually kind of cool because, when I was young, I'd like a new band and they'd only have one album out so I'd have to wait to get more, but with well established bands I could keep going back to the well for more!  Had a lot of fun during that time...

Huge fan of Queen, which I consider one of the top 10 greatest bands of all time.

What makes them special is that they were defiantly un-trendy (except for a brief foray into disco, which FM was curiously fond of). They didn't create songs based on market analysis or whatever was hot at the moment. They just made music they liked.

Who else would have put "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon", "39" and "Death on Two Legs" on one album?

They proudly displayed on their first album covers ... "No Synthesizers!"

I'm a huge fan of Queen. I was one of the idiots who paid $40 each for their CD's. They weren't available in the U.S. when CD's started becoming popular, they were all imported from the U.K. and cost a small fortune.

Never heard of Queen doing that, however that WAS emblazoned on Boston's first album.

Yep. It's on Wikipedia if you want to look er' up. That's one of the things that drew me to them in the first place. It amazed me the sound they put out with just guitars.

i can verify that craigb up until the game album they proudly boasted on each album and no synthasizer.

then there was a backlash that saw fans send in razors and nail polish when fred took on a more gay persona.  this happend at the same time.

then the hotspace album came out, i personally liked this album but it was the album that killed queen in the us.  the problem with this album or the fans problem with this album was it vered away from that very formula of no synths it was a heavy synth album.

Nope. What killed them in the US was an organized music-industry boycott of them because they played Sun City in South Africa. Wasn't until after Live Aid they made a small comeback, and it wasn't really until Wayne's World that they got their due, a little after Freddie died.

Thats an interesting take on that situation, I know about the Sun City stuff, thought it was a little bizzare, them playing in SA and all but they always said it was for the fans (but then there was all that no black person could afford to go to one of their shows).  Ok its a little sad to think a bunch of uninformend indivduals in America did that, they were the great survivors of the 70's rock.
