DAW Controller
Hi to you all. I'd like to know about the controllers. 1. The V-Studio 700 is Compatible with the Sonar X1 ?? 2. Can i use other controllers like the M-Audio Projectmix in Sonar X1? I know that the M-audio controller has some issues in the X1 but works perfect in sonar 8. The same as the V-studio. Because i want to switch from the Cubase to a new DAW, and the new DAW is Sonar, can someone please help me if the M-Audio problem is fixed in the lates update of Sonar ?? Thanx a lot for your time guys !!!

The vstudio 700 is a fantastic controller for Sonar. I don't know about the maudio. A lot of other controllers are compatible, but you'd need to find someone who uses it. I like Sonar enough to just jump in with both feet and get the CW interfaces.

@kc2ine : I know mate that the V-Studio is cakewalk product for Sonar, but in the site says for Sonar 8. I couldn't understand if some updates need to be done. If not a newbie dude! @JoshWolfer : Mate, do you use the V-Studio with the Sound Card or only the Console ? Because now I'm setting up my own studio I'm in budget planning so the sonsole consts a lot of money instead of M-Audio. But I'm sure they are not the same thing. Can anyone tell me his experience working with the console and if its worth buying the Sound Card as well of only the Console. I was planning to buy the M-Audio Profire2626 for soundcard

I have both the C + R. I'd use the console without the IO, but since the console controls the IO, I think they really go together. I can quickly change the gain settings and such of the IO, via the console faders, as opposed to having to launch the GUI for the IO. The main reason why I think the IO wouldn't be so good without the console is that the volume control and mute is on the Console. So you'd have to muck with software faders to control the output, which is just a pain. Also, both headphone outs are on the console, not the IO. So IMO, the console can stand alone, but the IO really needs the console to go with it. It's a dynamic duo. Believe me, I know about the cost. It took me several months to save up and finally take the v700 plunge, but I don't regret a moment of it. It has radically changed how I operate my DAW, in both comfortability, accuracy, and speed in doing things. If you want to buy one, talk to my man John Burrola at West LA Music and tell him I sent you. He gave me a deal on it that I couldn't refuse and in general has taken good care of me. PM me and I'll give you his direct email if you're interested. Cheers,

Also, on second thought, if you're already using a studio monitor splitter / control system, like the mackie big knob, the lack of volume and headphone controls on the IO won't really make a difference. So it might be negligible to you. Please note that the built on channel compressors are digital, so they will NOT compress at the analog gain stage, making them fairly useless IMO. I didn't realize this until after I purchased it. For really good vocals and such, I'm still planning on getting a solid analog pre / compressor. Cheers,

The OP asked if other controllers can be used with SONAR X1. The Tascam FW-1884 works well. Tascam has discontinued this unit, but there are probably still some circulating in the used market. The main reason for that is the users who were scared by Tascam's long delay in providing drivers. It took a dedicated user campaign to get them to relent. I'm concerned what will happen with Windows 8, and suspect we will replay the previous drama but without success next time. Nevertheless, for the moment, we users of the FW-1884 and SONAR are in good shape.
Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit. Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch. Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

It was in August 2009: I was very disappointed about MAudio Projectmix. I lost the controller (audio) every one hour and had to restart the controller and Sonar (8.0). I had the controller on the left side from my monitors. So the display from the controller was very bad to read at an angle of 45 degrees. I returned the projectmix. I will go and buy VS 700 at december 2011.

stormrider, I have 2 different controllers, the Maudio Axiom49 2nd gen and the AKAI APC40. I use the APC40's sliders and faders far more often than the Axiom. I took the time to program many of the functions and VST controls using ACT and ACT LEARN for the APC40. It plays very nice with X1C now and I'm very comfortable with it. I see these things on craigslist all the time for $150 to $250, I think it was a fascinating concept until all the people that bought it from guitar center found out they were musically inept and were never going to dj a party larger than 20 friends. The axiom works reasonably well, when I'm working with 16 tracks, I can work seamlessly using the two controllers. At this point, it is still more of a hobby than a commercially viable solution. If I ever start making a living with my studio, I may take the plunge into a V-studio, but by that time, something knew may have come along.

Perhaps something that can emulate Mackie Control. I haven't really kept up on control surfaces but seems like over the years a lot of control surfaces fall to the way side each time Sonar updates. It's probably a lot of work for Cakewalk to keep their control surface code updated every year and often they don't. For instance I have a CMLabs Motormix which was released about the same time as Sonar 4. Works perfect in Sonar 4, kinda sort of with Sonar 7 and my guess is even worse with later releases if at all. But the Mackie Control protocol seems to be a constant and I believe most DAW software support Mackie Control.

I use to V-700 everyday with Sonar X1, and it works wonderful. Speeds up simple tasks with a button and love the T-bar for Xray.

Having used and owned a few controllers in the past, the V-Studio is the best integrated option out there for Sonar 8 and also under X1, it is fine. There are some refinements that I'm sure are coming but right now, it is still the best option for tight integration with Sonar. Happy shopping!
