Sonar Audio Engine Crash
Does anyone else have problems with Sonar Audio engine dying when adding a new effect or virtual instrument? So far I can't lock it down to a specific effect or V.I. It seems to be random but it is very frustrating as I have to shut down Sonar and restart it and then the effect and the audion engine works again. Sonar is also very slow to open the project, which doesn't have but only 22 tracks in it most of which are already frozen tracks.

This is probably due to a lack of a good sound card or you may need to adjust your driver mode and buffer/latency settings. Without any information on your set-up, its hard to give you a direct answer, other than its drvier/pc related

Sonar is also very slow to open the project, which doesn't have but only 22 tracks in it most of which are already frozen tracks. This is rare, but yes - I do get this on occasion. This is nothing new - it used to happen with earlier versions as well, but with the earlier versions I could easily restart the engine without re-starting Sonar. For some reason, if the X1 engine dies it does not come back to life without a restart (I can physically stop it and start it, but when it dies - it dies). It happens so little I don't really worry about it, but if it happened every time I tried to insert a VST/VSTi I would not be very happy.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! It would be nice if Sonar X1 had a debug log file that we could use to troubleshoot and figure out WHY this is happening. Where the crash is occurring. Cakewalk Developers, please add this in the next version of Sonar. It would be a tremendous help to find out what is the cause of these 'random' crashes. Thank you. (btw, it is not my hardware...works find with other Daw software and is very up to date)

even if it worked flawlessly in 8.5.3? that's what is happening for me and i haven't changed hardware/driver settings.

Yea, even it it worked in 8.5.3. Things change and 8.5.3 is different from X1. It has a revised audio engine and some other factors

CJAY, Are you saying that if I have RME interface or Roland or Presonus or Mackie that each one will require a unique setup in Sonar X1 to work correctly and fix my crashing issue?

dgrm44 CJAY, Are you saying that if I have RME interface or Roland or Presonus or Mackie that each one will require a unique setup in Sonar X1 to work correctly and fix my crashing issue? I'm not CJ, but I'll chime in... you don't necessarily need a unique setup for each, but you may need to "tweak" your system differently for each to run optimally. The bottom line here is that drivers play a big role in the interface's performance, and not all drivers are created equal (even from update to update).

JonD is correct. Drivers for sound cards are all different and each sound cardmay need different settings

x1 doesn't have a revised audio engine compared to 8.5, it has a new gui

Ok, so is there an official driver guide for Sonar X1? What are the optimal settings for each hardware interface? I have 3 interfaces, the Mackie Onyx, the Presonus Firestudio Mobile and the Roland U25EX.

pwal x1 doesn't have a revised audio engine compared to 8.5, it has a new gui Er, it's a gui with a lot of programming underneath. And drivers are written to interact with different areas of that programming -- not just "the audio engine".

dgrm44 Ok, so is there an official driver guide for Sonar X1? What are the optimal settings for each hardware interface? I have 3 interfaces, the Mackie Onyx, the Presonus Firestudio Mobile and the Roland U25EX. No official driver guide that I'm aware of... And as far as the optimal settings for each interface... that's for you to experiment with and find on your own (How could CW even compile such a list? Think about it. There are thousands of possible hardware/software combinations - not to mention all the tweakable settings). Best approach IMO is to start by optimizing your system for audio (There are plenty of online guides for this. Make sure you follow one that's current and applies to your OS). Often, just doing this optimization can save you from the typical "bad performance" problems in audio. Good luck.

I don't have bad performance issues, I have crashing issues of the audio engine when dragging a new plugin into an effects bin, or when adding a virtual instrument to the synth rack. And it isn't consistent, sometimes it works fine, othetimes the audio engine stops and I have to restart the project. And sometimes the whole project crashes and I have to try again after restarting it.

Hi dgrm44, If you are using WIN7, here is something that you could try, I'm not saying that it will definitely fix your issue but its worth trying. First you will need to enable "view hidden folders" in the "view tab" of: control panel / Appearance and Personalization / folder options Then you can find and delete the AUD INI file from the following location (I am not sure if this location is the same for Vista / XP): C/Users/your username folder/AppData/Roaming/Cakewalk/Sonar X1 Producer The next time you launch Sonar the AUD INI file will be rebuilt. Also be aware that if you use friendly driver names or have tweaked any values in the Configuration File, (for example ThreadSchedulingModel set to 2 for multi-core processors) Then you will have to tweak these again. Hope this resolves your issue. Oddmeister

Since this is really bothering you - why don't you just stop transport while inserting new plugins? I never felt the need to have it running doing that. Unless you have plenty other hangups as well - it's just one thing to do differently and you are fine. When runnings firewire I had plenty tweaks before having it run correctly with multicore processor. That on BIOS level and drivers for firewire making them legacy style, trying plenty brands of cables and interface cards with and with TI or VIA chipsets - and more things like making sure firewire cable was not twisted or bent while audio was running etc. If you get my drift - I left firewire all together. It's asking for trouble sooner or later.
