Newbie Layers Question

Hi Everyone,

Newbie here, learning Sonar Producer X1. I have a questions about layers. When I record an audio track using layers and look in my audio file under the project, there is only one audio track - even though I have recorded 3 layers and saved my project. Why is that? I would have expected 3 audio files if I recorded 3 layers. At the moment, I am exporting each layer to it's own audio file and then placing it back on a new track as a work around, but I'm sure there must be something I'm not doing correctly.....

Thanks :-)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "look in my audio file". If you mean you're actually going checking on the data in Windows Explorer, then why are you doing that?

Do you mean you can't see the layers in SOnar? If so just click on the "Show layers icon" towards top right of the track header, next to the "Minimize/restore strip" icon

He means, as he says, that in the project audio folder he only sees one audio file. Why he has gone there to look, is pure curiosity, wanting to learn about SONAR, I guess, and is not our concern.

And now he's exporting each layer to make sure they stay separate.

To the OP, please confirm: So you are seeing only one audio FILE (wav), not a an audio FOLDER containing possibly three wavs?? Did you check.
You are right. Every layer (and every take, too, unlesss "undo" is used immediately after take) should show as an individual wav-file in the project audio folder.

Yes, Kalle Rantaaho - that is exactly what I'm trying to say. I'm only seeing one audio WAV file in the project audio folder, when I should be expecting 3 if I tracked 3 layers, right?

The reason I need separate takes is that after singing, I need to send the best take to my mentor and producer overseas and I can't as there seems to be only one audio WAV file for all the layers no matter how many I make.

I know that I could create audio to a different track and have them separate, but I really want to learn layers and I can't understand why there wouldn't be separate Audio files for each layer. Am I doing something wrong?

    (By the way, I'm a she :-) )

Thanks so much for your quick responses!

In that case I would record into separate tracks not layers and then export them into separate files in one go, there's a preset in the export dialogue to do just that. I use it frequently.

Thanks FastBikerBoy - I have done that, but when I don't have much screen left because of many tracks, I'd love to be able to use the layers option to reduce the number of tracks showing on my screen.

Am I supposed to have different audio files, or is that the way Sonar behaves?

I have no idea. I think I recall it said that clips in the same track are seen by Sonar as one wave file but no idea about layers.

No worries, thanks anyway - maybe someone else knows otherwise I'll have to ask Cakewalk.

The workings of the audio files in the project folder are kind of unusual, and you'll rarely get what you want just by trying to use those files. Going through an export step is the only consistent way of doing what you're trying to do.

In this case, when you loop record into layers, which I'm guessing is what you've been doing, it just writes it all into one continuous file.

Thanks John - it is unsual - but at least I know now and am not looking for files that I thought should be there. Funny there is no documentation about this that I could find anywhere. Thanks for the confirmation. Now I can get back to making music.

acme - why don't you just drag the layers (they're seperate takes right?) you like to their own track - and bounce each of these to a seperate wav file? That would be a pretty easy way to send the best takes to your friend.

Just label each one with a good name as you're exporting it.
