percussion strip signal chain- OR- Tip of the day.

i have noticed that in many percussion strip presets, the gate/expander comes after the compressor in the signal chain.  This week, Ive been mixing a project that was started by a guy who studied engineering and production at Belmont in Nashville.  I'm noticing that he also put eq and compression before the gate/expander EVEN THO the gate was equipped with high and low shelf side chain.                                i immediately reordered the plugins and got better results from the gate.   it makes no sense to me to put compression before gate.  what i'm wondering is- Is there something i dont know here?

I've seen it both ways.  I think it depends on the source material.

If you compress a noisy signal first, that doesn't make sense (to me).  So I'd put the gate first in that case.

However, if you're going for an effect (like a rythmic pulse), I'd put the gate last.

    Hence, it depends ;)
