How do I make a phantom audio device go away?

I recently removed my firewire MOTU 828 MKII from my setup. The device is disconnected from my PC's firewire port, I have verified that the driver is not loaded, and Sonar does not see it as a device I can select in my audio device preferences. Nonetheless, each time I start Sonar it complains about the missing MOTU device. I can create a new project from scratch and I still get this issue.

I tried saving a copy of AUD.ini and then editing the file manually to remove all references to the MOTU device but this did not make the problem go away. I held down the shift key while launching Sonar and still got the same message about the missing device.

How can I get Sonar to forget this device ever existed?

You may have to clean it out of your registry. Deleting the AUD.ini causes it to re-write itself - editing it is not necessary.
Is it showing up as an available driver inside Sonar? (Driver settings page?) EDIT:  OOOps!  Reread confirms!

The device is registered within the song/file so you should just be able to re-assign each output within your song and then save, it shouldn't appear after that but I'm afraid you'll have to do it for all your projects that were using the motu.
I don't think there is any other way of doing this.

If you get that message when creating a new project, the template you are using might have a reference to that device in a track or bus.

Both above correct.  Correct your "Normal" or whatever template you use and resave it.  Then in each project that throws up that dialog correct and resave.  Also check your registry entries and make sure there is no reference there.

I created a new project so it was not anything associated with the particular file I was working on. I am going to try to resave the normal template to make sure it does not see the MOTU. I would rather not remove the drivers because I may use that device for remote recording now. I finally changed my sig to avoid confusion on what hardware I was using so I appreciate the heads up on that one! I can see how that would have led to some interesting speculation and confusion.
