The Historically Grouchy Sound Man (And Why Not To Be Him)

This is the title to an article about sound guys. Do you agree with this guy? I didn't know that most all sound men/women were grouchy.

This is a pro sound link and guaranteed to be clean- http://www.prosoundnetwork.com/article/the-historically-grouchy-sound-man-and-why-not-to-be-him/13513#

    I'm sure Karyn isn't him.

I can't rule out McQ though.

I've not done the 1812, and the last AC/DC cover band I worked didn't have cannons either.

JB, it's not the size that matters, it's how you use it.  It's also whether or not you spontaneously combust.

Some things are just better big and might make up for skill in certain cases. I haven't combusted yet although I probably should have.

I always thought sound people were underrated. When things go well the band gets the credit. If things stink they blame the sound engineer. Can't tell you how many times some unknowing person points their mike toward a speaker and then all eyes go to the sound engineer.

How about when the guitar player didn't plug one of his effects in all the way and it comes time for his solo. He looks over at the sound person like WT... and the sound person starts double checking everything on the board.

I have a friend who does FOH for some *MAJOR* acts and was fired from a *MAJOR* comeback tour due the artists' heads being up their proverbial arses. Of course my friend could not get the sound right when a bunch of nepotistic raging stoners couldn't play what they wrote those many moons ago. Had to be the sound guy's fault, roight?

It doesn't matter whether the problems lie with the equipment, the band, the engineer, or the keyboardist's mother.  When you're on that stage, you never throw anyone else under the bus and blame them for your problems.  When you're on the stage, you own it, for good or ill.

It's a show.  Perform.  Overcome your obstacles and get over it.  That's what a performer does.  Posers blame everyone around them for their problems.

My High School music teacher taught me this.  I blame her.

I can turn it on and I can turn it off.

Sometimes I get hired just to BE grouchy.

I'm usually the "yeah, we can do that" guy because that's the easiest way to be.

Today, my FOH guy was "Moose"... at the end of the day I got to thank Moose for being such a pleasure to work with. He gave me a board feed with no buzz, which meant neither of us had to pretend to be grouchy. That's the easy way to do things.

    best regards,
    mike
