I don't know if it's still available, but I used to use a program called FX Teleport that allowed me to run plugins on networked machines to distribute the cpu load... You might search for it on http://www.kvraudio.com or some such place.

It worked pretty well even back then with only a 100Mb network network capacity... Now with 1G or better, it should be really nice... But it may be 32bit limited for plugins... I don't know if it's been kept up or not...

I don't recall if it was free/donation/paid... I hope this helps a little.

MIDI Over LAND CP - MoL CP - for MIDI
AudioPort Universal - for 32channels audio

there are cost-free MIDI solutions (like MIDI Bag) but I haven't seen cost-free audio solutnions :-/

Check out the following video. The demo uses another DAW but the concept works in Sonar as well.

I found that with some systems there are problems in proper configuration in SONAR - especially with MIDI.
And this is SONAR-specific issue only :-/

Unfortunately - it's not as easy and problemless as on this youtube movie - in a fact you an try it by yourself using DEMO versions.

Second thing - When I was testing AudioPort few months ago - this sortware didn't allow you for two way communication, what was important for me - to use remote computer as a LAN effects processor.

You want Vienna Ensemble Pro.  Accept no substitutes.

I've seen Vienna Ensemble pro... 175 euro or so..... Hmmm.

I have a DM24 connected to a P4 with an RME (soon to be replaced with a heftier machine) (dual Athlon MP)
    I have a SI24 connected to a Quadcore with 3GB ram.

Both have GB-lan and I do have a US Robotics switch in my mixingroom. I'd like to record 16 tracks in the P4. And then transfer to the quadcore for mixing. Maybe integrate both. Not sure yet. I downloaded Reaper for an initial test.

I won the RME on an online auction. And there I was with an cheap RME card. But that card cannot work in 64bit. I didn't wanna change my 64bit DAW. So I took one of my spare PC's and integrated the soundcard for a test. Well. It worked nicely. So now I am thinking about my options.

If the P4 records 16 tracks at 48khz-24bit for like 3 minutes. I'm happy. And use it for tracking. The DM24 has better preamps then my SI24.
