New iPad...Yippee!...Some questions regarding forum use.

I just replaced my 9 year old laptop with a new iPad at work.  Haven't even pulled it out of the box yet.  Of course all work issues are secondary to knowing it will work on this forum!!!  Work?  Pfft.  Forum.  Must have.  Any you fellers or gals have one of these contraptions and use it on the forums.

Bonus points...how does it work for general biz stuff like emails and such??  Is there a Microsoft Word or Open Office text app??

EDIT:  Looks like HD2 Office and Pages are the review winners in the word proc. category.  Any users here??

My wife got one. She swore she would not use one and now I think she is married to the thing lol. It does all of the email and surfing stuff with aces. I am concerned though that you may not be able to use it on this forum. My iphone will let me see the forum on Safari but it won't allow me to post.....another one of those proprietary battles Apple is trying to fight. Apple stuff won't allow flash player and a lot of other stuff........I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but I don't believe I am.

I had one and I returned for android Toshiba thrive tablet,
couldn't live without ports, being stack to itunes, not being able to send email with attachment
etc etc the list is long what you cannot do. Granted it does look cool and it's very light comparing to other tablets.
Anyway for me just for internet and ebooks reading way too expensive.

I did some sleuthing and Wha-Hey...just like Sonar there are "workarounds" that suit fine and, of course, there's "an app for that"...several really.  Apple is such a dichotomy.  They make killer diller stuff then ruin it by being so proprietary and paranoid.  Guess I've got a learning curve ahead.

Pal, the bad news is that I had to close my Safari app that I generally use to surf the inter webs, and open up something called "Atomic Web" to post here. This particular forum and my iPad do not play well together, although it's the ONLY forum I've had problems won't. I dinna understand it... Atomic Web is a paid app that cloaks the browser as various other browsers, including Safari Desktop, IE6,7 or 8, Firefox, etc. However, taking the default "Safari Mobile" (which is presumably what my iPad Safari app is) allows me to post here. No paragraph breaks, I'm afraid, but I can at least make myself known. There was another option IIRC, but I can't remember what it is... Also a paid app though... But there is a thread about it somewheres. I'd search for it, myself, but I can't even begin to tell you what a pain it would be... Have been begging for Cake to fix it in various threads, but I guess I'm in too small of a minority. Other than the Cake Forum issues, I ADORE my iPad. I may require surgery to remove it.

I REALLY want a Motorola XOOM, and I REALLY do not want an i-Pad 2 but the latency thing is a dealbreaker. However, since Google just bought Motorola I am thinking/hoping that they will address the weak link in Android or Honeycomb or in the device... I am not clear on what the problem is that causes high latency in all the tablets except the i-Pad. Plus no flash with i-Pad, IIRC.  I am convinced that these things wil be addressed this year or within a year. My ex- son-in-law was over yesterday. He works for Google and they (Google) are awash in cash. They provide transportation vans for the employees, 45 minutes one way. The van has internet access of course and they sit back and surf all the way to work and of course, it is all free. They cater their meals at work every day and they have incredible toys to work with too. He told me he has (and I don't know if this is supossed to be public knowledge) three 900G solid state hard drives at work. He said they are about 12,000 bucks each. I mentioned to him the problem with latency and if I can get a better understanding of it I will clue him in more. They are all getting XOOMs. I told him that the IK guy had mentioned that IK is on standby waiting for Android or Honeycomb to fix the latency problem. It only makes sense that they will fix it, especially if it gets on their radar screen and stays there.
IMO, when they fix the latency problem the XOOM will be a much better choice than the i-Pad (or the ASUS Transformer) at least for people who do more with music than just listen to it.

Right, on Mac you have to have workaround for any standard activity...
IMO Apple is sick a company - they could make twice as much money by lifting those stupid limitations. They do really nice hi-tec devices and they push away most of intelligent customers because no company

is going to tell me what I can or cannot do on my freaking tablet!

Yeah, but the problem isn't really with Safari Mobile (the iPad Browser) per se... Its the forum software, from what I understand. It doesn't acknowledge the pop up keyboard for text entry as in normal iPad use on the net. The one thing I DON'T like about the iPad is the lack of Flash.... I remember seeing somewhere that Steve Jobs was certain that Flash was "old" technology (it IS) and that not allowing it would force people to adopt the new technology (It HASN'T). which also means no Soundclick. No Reverbnation. Julibee hasn't been in the songs forum for quite some time... Mr. jobs may be right about the old technology, but I don't think it's going to disappear anytime soon. I fought the whole Apple thing for a long time... I was a Systems Trainer for PC, and I know the ins and outs of both platforms... I preferred PC for most things (or maybe I was just more used to PC, hard to say). But the bottom line is that my iPhone and my iPad are both so damn ELEGANT that I had to have them. They are objects of beauty as much as objects of usefulness. I've never found any Droid or PC based anything that could hold a candle to the Mac touch screens... Which is truly where the difference lies for me. iProducts simply WORK as intended. Unless you are a member of this forum. :S

Well...I've got my other boxes to take up the slack.  And I seriously considered the "honeycomb" bunch of pads too...still I'm used to my iPhone and the iPad seemed like an extension of that...so I was sucked in.  To me it's kind of like WAVES software and their piss poor attitudes and draconian policies (which, of late, are actually getting better).  I detest much about them but I still use them anyway.  :-)

I decided to pass up the tablet craze and go straight for a brain implant.  They punched a hole in the skull, but couldn't find anything.  Now, the implant just rattles around in there.  On my way home from the trailer park mud hut clinic Apple store, I was grabbed by the neck by a street musician who used me as one of his maracas.  My share of the day's haul was about $2.73.

Oh, and it's still better than the forum software...

I can't seem to find the rainbow...
I found a rainbow once. Unfortunately there wasn't a Leprechaun with a pot of gold at the end it, but rather this guy ...

... I think he was holding the Leprechaun against his will for some kind of experiment. All I kept hearing was this loud, high pitched, muffled sound, coming from somewhere that kept screaming, "Let me out! Let me out!".

I've had an Ipad2 for about 2 months now. Off the cuff, here's what I've learned: -You CAN become an app fiend fairly quickly. Pace yourself. -You may want to eventually include it in your studio rig. Be aware that Apple has lowered the power output on the camera connection port. As of iOS 4.2 it won't put out as much juice as it used to. Varied Apple reasoning on that. Long story short, If you require USB, buy the camera connection kit and then buy a POWERED USB port. -FLIPBOARD and ZITE should be your primary downloads. Trust me on this one. -Garageband is overrated. Spend if you must. -Get Groovebug. NOW! -Facetime and Skype are cool on the IPAD. -Air Video can turn your home computer into a server so you don't have to fill up your HD with movies, etc... Very cool. -NBC, ABC, TBS, TNT are available as apps. Check them out. -Battery life is amazing. Also, there is a solar charging case coming out for it soon. It's called Lilypad. Google it. Very cool. -I drag this thing from room to room in my house. I've been reading more than I have since college. This thing is Amazing. I could go on and on... Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, Reginald K.Son
