They call it...

..... a near earth object...and it's coming soon to a planet near you. and it's pretty big according to the estimates..400 meters... bigger than a football field.  I'm guessing if it hits anywhere near you it would easily be classified as an extinction event for you and the person next to you as well.

Are they likely to recur without surgical intervention?

Last time I got hit by a football pitch was because I was brought down in the penalty area.

It didn't do any lasting damage other than I'd still swear I would have scored, and I have a lasting resentment toward the ref. who didn't award the penalty.

    Fun stuff.
I especially like the first and third links they are interesting. Last spring there was a huge earthquake in the midwest and another swarm at the same time in the Yellowstone area. One particular quake was about 300" beeneath Lake Yellowstone... right under the middleof the lake.
if a magma pipe opens into Lake Yellowstone and it drains into the supervolcano at Yellowstone, it will explode and you wont have to worry about near earth objects anymore.

Oh, and since today is 9/11 this map may be interesting to keep and eye on: http://www.globalincidentmap.com/

    J,

I remember a bunch of conspiracy theories going round about the BP oil spill..... it was theorized that once the oil got to a certain level, the water pressure would rush into the hole, and since temps were in the 500 degree range... a huge explosion would occur, and the sea floor would then collapse back into the crater from the explosion resulting in tsunami waves hundreds of feet high, sweeping inland and bouncing around the Gulf basin for days. Everything within  30 miles or so of the coast line would be wiped clean....

    Pftttt!

I've heard lots of intriguing stuff about the Wyoming caldera.  Didn't it supposedly blow up in the far distant past?

I wouldn't be too worried about this.  They always seem to issue those Near Earth Object alerts at my destination airport everytime I'm on a plane.  I don't know why...
