Wait for me to turn on audio interface: Feature request

I guess this never happened to anybody else. I am just too excited:
I click on X1 and : I forgot to turn on my MOTU interface!

So, I get this warning:
There are no audio devices for the current driver model on your system. Please go to Edit / Preferences / Audio / Playback and Recording and choose a different drivel model.

No! I just forgot to turn on my audio interface!

Please, please: Implement a 'Retry' button. Or, just don't look for an interface until I open a project.

Wouldn't it be easier to fire up everything else in your studio BEFORE switching your DAW on?

This is what I've been doing for years:

    1. Outboard
    2. DAW
    3. Monitors
Switching off is always the reverse of that.

I agree with you wilko.  I've done the same thing.

but this is not the real place for a feature request.

I don't know of another DAW that has this sort of convenience.  Or for that matter any software that will let drivers load after the fact. I think one would do well in setting up a routine and some method to turn on gear quickly. I use a single switch for my outboard gear and wait for all the drivers to load before I load X1 or any other software that uses these drivers.

    Same here.

I have yet to see anywhere a DAW that does just that.

The procedure that I...learned...through error...was Outboard, DAW, Monitors....with reverse order on shutting down....

To the OP - that's not really a problem any more, isn't it? I agree, a retry button would be nice. However, when you add an audio interface while Sonar is running you get a pop up message asking if you want Sonar to connect to it - and that it would stop playback (which probably isn't running anyway). Then you assign your Master Bus to whatever output you want on the audio interface, if it hasn't done so automatically, and play away as you will. It only takes a few seconds.

In your case, if/when you forget to switch on your audio interface - which can happen to even the greatest man on earth - just let Sonar load and moan about no interface and when it's up and running, switch on your interface and Sonar will connect to it.

Same here. I have yet to see anywhere a DAW that does just that.

trimph1 & John: Studio One checks to see if all the devices are there when it starts up. If it cannot initialize a certain device, it will tell you which device it can't find and ask if you want to connect it before continuing.

ProjectM: An audio interface itself might re-connect nicely, but if any type of control surface is not up and running Sonar will remove it and you will have to add it again. Any custom settings not stored in a preset may be lost. (I know my Axiom is a pain when I forget to turn it on before Sonar)

I agree with the OP, this would be a convenient little feature for those times I do forget.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

    Hey Codamedia!

What's you'r pain with the Axiom? All I have to do when I forget to switch mine on is to set the Control surface to receive messages from the Axiom in the Preferences and everything is back to normal. Don't know how that works for dedicated CS like the Mackie Pro etc. MIDI inputs/connections IIRC are automatically reassigned.

Driver thing maybe? I don't remember if I've installed the M-Audio driver with this or if I let Win7 take care of it...

BTW, that Studio One function sounds pretty sweet!

I should explain that the MOTU UltraLite mk3 hybrid does no turn on when you connect power. You have to push a button.

I am using a digital connection to my M-Audio DSM3 monitors. They automatically come out of standby mode when they get a valid audio signal. So, I never get a pop.

And I don't have any outboard equipment.

Wilko I don't think anyone would be opposed to the idea. I was just pointing out a way to do things with as least fuss as possible.

    John,

Sure. And it would work for me if my interface would turn on when you supply power.
I will go ahaed and formally request the feature.

    I also agree with Wilko...

This would be a really cool feature to have in SONAR. Instead of continuing to load and popping up useless informational dialog boxes. SONAR should just pause loading and tell you that it can't find the audio interface and then give you the option to continue once its turned on...without screwing up your MIDI controller settings.
I've seen at least one other DAW that handles it like that (Studio One maybe, as mentioned). I also believe that Pro Tools 9 will abort loading if it can't find your audio interface.
I probably accidentally forget to turn on my V-Studio 700 interface beforehand a couple of times a month. As ProjectM mentions, its a simple fix to open the controllers panel and reconfigure things. However, each time I go thru the shutting down SONAR, turning on the interface, restarting SONAR and then reconfigure the controllers page , it reminds me of why I've decided that SONAR can't be my only ace-in-the-hole. The lack of proper error-handling makes SONAR feel somewhat unrefined and can be an inspiration killer.

    Likewise.

I never physically switch off my interface, console, outboard etc by their own on/off switches.

It ALL gets switched on/off at a single wall point.

THEN I power up my DAW.

THEN I power up my monitors.

ProjectM: The pain is minimal - just annoying. I use a custom Axiom Map, and maybe that is part of the problem. What you said takes care of things, but I need another additional step. Start the Axiom, set the Control Surface to receive messages from the Axiom, then I have to load my stored map. I did learn the hard way that if I did not save the map as a preset - I would have to rebuild it from scratch

A simple pause if the device it not found (to allow the device to be turned on) would be great.

Ah, I see. Thought you might be running into something even more troublesome. I have experienced this as well, my Axiom is unrecognizable from the factory set-up and depend on a custom ACT template, but this issue has never really bothered me since it's fixed within 3 seconds. And the loading pause would be cool when senility kicks in

but while on the topic, I seem to have noticed that my ACT is ACTing really well even when I've forgotten to switch it on before loading Sonar, as in no need to get the template or anything else... I will try this when I get to my studio tonight. I just had a helluva hunch that something has changed for the better with regard to this... I will let you know;)
