Is Sonar LE mainly for MIDI?
I know I can bring in audio files and, I assume, I can set up to record audio to LE thru my BR800. (That's why I bought it.) Now after trying to learn for a few days, I'm concerned because I see almost all the Youtube videos discuss how to do things in MIDI but I'm not a MIDI guy. (Just not my sound or style and it seems complicated for this old git) Is Sonar intended mainly for MIDI and the audio being only a small part of the program?

Cakewalk started as a MIDI-only program. Audio capability was added later and perhaps since MIDI seems so complicated to so many people, that's why they have so many videos on how to use it. But I believe now more people record audio on Cakewalk DAWs than record MIDI, even though they may use MIDI backing tracks, or add instruments they don't have or can't play. What do you want to know about recording audio? Sorry I can't answer any of your other questions, though.

This sounds reasonable and a relief to someone facing what seems like a steep learning curve. I didn't want to invest the time if I should be looking at some other program. thanks for the prompt reply. My main goal at this time is: 1.to get registered (Can't find a reg. number on the CD or the box) 2 to upgrade to at least 8.5.2 (I got 8.5.1.17 bundled with the BR800) so I can get Audio snap and Groove Quantize. 3. to figure out how to use the above on Audio tracks.

Hi Glenn, and welcome. I've touched briefly on your other questions in the other threads. I agree with Greg that MIDI seems to be mysterious to many users, so it gets a lot of visibility. Sonar is really about the audio, and MIDI is just the protocol for controlling certain sounds. MIDI is a conduit, and has no sound of its own. I can understand the association with a "MIDI sound", because of how it can be used, but really, the notion is invalid. For example, this song is based entirely on some MIDI based instruments(aka softsynths): http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10285834 As Greg mentioned, MIDI can give you access to instruments you do not have or do not know how to play, as I have done in the song above. The real meat of Sonar is in dealing with the audio, whether from the softsynths, or tracks you have recorded from real instruments or vocals. I am somewhat curious about your emphasis on Audio Snap. While I can understand its usefulness, I have never felt a pressing need for it. Can you shed some light on what you are wanting to do?

Right. It is an assumption that Audio Snap is what I am looking for. Often enough I'll lay down or get a track from a collaboration that is not the feel or has some just plain poor timing. I have been cutting and pasting in Audacity to correct the timing. I was looking for a more automated process for this. I understand MIDI can be "humanized" now, and it's more the learning curve than MIDI itself. I have a GR20 synth that I use for my padding FX and even the odd solo. Mostly it's because I'm an old analogue guy and if it sounds like a machine I'm simply not taken with it. It's probably more of a generational thing. I'm 66. You have done a great job of your soundclick track and a fine job of engineering. Do you do vocals?

No, unfortunately, I sing like a dying elk. You would probably find Audio Snap quite beneficial, in light of what you have mentioned. Follow through on the registration, and look at the upgrade pricing on X1 Studio and Producer. Note: the license is not transferable, so I would be extremely leery of any Sonar 8.5 deals you may see. And thanks. I record all of my MIDI tracks live, just as with a real instrument, using a controller. I tend to agree, that if it sounds mechanical, it is just not effective. Stick with it. The learning curve is notoriously vertical at first, but it levels off. Don't try to learn it all at once. With that in mind, you may want to move to X1 fairly quickly, as the layout is very different from 8.5. And browse the forums here, all of them. There are little tidbits of information everywhere.

Maybe I've misunderstood what you actually mean, no offence intended. I tend to take written text litterally :o/ It's the LE you got with BR800, right? Upgrading LE 8.5.1.17 to LE 8.5.2 does not give you Audiosnap. You need to upgrade to Producer-version. Well actually Roberts post already implies thast.
