Is it true? New install of DimPro, Rapture etc.... Scott...
According to Scott G. , here: DigiFreq, that on a clean install, all old project synth parameters are lost because you have to load new instances of the synth? Maybe I'm reading it wrong? I did a new install on win7 64 of everything and am trying to open old projects. Sonar can't find the Dim Pro or rapture that I had in the synth rack. I can load new instances of the synths.

I ordered the boxed just for this, it says all you have to do is install disc 1(if you have 8.5.3), and skip Dim. Pro, and Beatscape(discs2&3).install 4 if you want an expansion pack for Dim. Pro, but its probably for the version that comes with X1. Not sure, but why change Dim Pro from 8.5 to X1?

Ha ha Bub, you're too cool to be true man Didn't Cake change the file format for the audio source files in Dim Pro from wav to Flac or something and that was the cause of it all? I think there was something about X1 preferring the latest Dim Pro version but the latest version isn't backwards compatible or something with the older version. So that means that you have to reassign everything in your projects and your custom presets will be overwritten unless you back them up and copy them into the new Dim Pro presets folder. Oh, and IIRC the 1.5 version and 1.2 version can't co-exist on your DAW. This is what I can draw from memory but I'm not 100% sure I'm being acurate. Just thought I'd try to contribute here . Dim Pro is gone from my older projects, which kind of is cool because then I have to re-select/design sounds which most likely was my itention to begin with. But it's a PITA for when the sounds are needed there.

Well, I'm trying to figure this out for 8.53. I have to come here cause nobody's over there. Not even Bapu. Rapture's the same problem. So, once you go past version 1.2 on either program, your sol for all your preset choices and tweaking???? Are you frigging kidding me? And, so therefore, in effect, if you upgrade (no pun) to X1 by default you loose years of work??????? I remember reading a lot of threads about this back when X1 was released. It could have been fixed by now. I really wish someone in the know who were affected by this would chime in. I just can't for the life of me understand why they would leave it like this. Have you searched around the forums for directions on how to aproach this other than the thread above?

It's not like in the last 15 minutes I tried to do this. It's been days. I've re-installed windows 4 times, Sonar once. I'm practicing with loading plugs, see how it goes and then will start all over again. My last image was apres sonar and dimpro. so.....that's a no go, DOH. As far as I knew Dim Pro and rapture installed correctly. I never checked with existing projects. BUB.... I remember when you were talking about the components of your new DAW you were building and upgrading to X1. I said to myself, "Damn, he's such a nice guy, I hate to see this happen to him." But I didn't say anything because I didn't want to seem all negative and stuff. Ha.. well, I'm not moving to X1 anytime soon. I still don't know why all you guys did. and, what good does "freezing" do with WIPs........?

I promise not trying to piss ya off, but The warm and fuzzy post, was what worked for me from Cake support, as far as getting to Dim. Pro 1.5 in 8.5.3! I also called Tech Friday, I think, because of same reason-Scotts post about Dim pro not working in X1. That was when he(Tech)told me to ignore the X1 installation of Dim Pro! First page of welcome book in box set(X1 Producer), I quote, "If you are upgrading from SONAR 8.5 Producer you do not need to install or download Dimension Pro or Beatscape unless you need or want to reinstall them. So who is right-Tech, and mini book "welcome to Sonar X1", or Scott? Will Dim. Pro 1.5 from 8.5.3 work in Sonar X1! I know you are just trying to get your situation figured out, but how much more confusing can they make it? If you are trying to get to Dim. Pro 1.5 in Sonar 8.5.3, that post will get you there, but then what? If that's what you are even trying to do, I'm confusing both of us probably, but right now, no X1 in my system, Dim. Pro. 1.5 is alive and well in 8.5.3! Good luck, sorry if made things worse, let the big dogs have at it!

Hey Gray. No 'piss off' here:) It's all good. you said: I called Cakewalk, and they said, do everything as listed, first time asked to Browse, go to Program Files\Cakewalk\VST plugins, but second time around, when asked to Browse, got to Program Files\Cakewalk\VST plugins\Dimension Pro! I just got off the phone 15 minutes ago. I actually threw in the C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VST plugins\Dimension Pro, to be scanned in the Plug-in Manager! I checked, and it is listed in VSTi Dimension Pro, clicked on, came up with a 64dll, so I am now taking a break. Hope someone got something out of this, when in doubt, call Tech, was talking to a person in 3 minutes! Is that what you're talking about? If so, It's unclear how to get 32bit and 64 bit working. At least for my limited intelligence. When I say "working", I mean where they are compatible with previous installs so you can load a project done in 8.53 on an XP rig, on a new win7 rig in 32 bit or 64 bit and have everything work and patch correctly. I can load Dim pro for a new project.

Yep, thats where I would do you no good, I was just going for the x64 install, but think it should all be the same! Or even easier, I feel for ya, hope ya get it, this whole move to X1 has been one of the craziest things I have ever seen! Of course, It's not my profession, I just like to make music, but a product that's costing newbies 400 bucks, with no experience in "cake" software are in for a shock! Once again good luck!

I'm strictly going from memory, but, I think DP 1.5 may be VST only whereas previous versions were both VST and Dxi. So if you were using the Dxi version previously you may not have anything you saved with it when upgrading to v1.5. Then again, I could be completely off base, in which case please ignore me.

Yea Steve. I checked on my old computer (XP32) and yes, I was running Dimpro 1.2 Dxi. That's probably it. Now, I just need to figure out a method to restore all my DP patch settings on the new comp. I was dreading the idea of having both computers running and manually finding the patches in DP in the new computer by opening up and looking at each file and DP settings in the new computer. Argh... Maybe if I load DP 1.5 on the old computer and then re-copy all my projects over, something will happen. That said, Rapture is the same problem. Actually, I was running thru some files yesterday to see what would load. I did about 15 projects and each would open with the missing plug dialogue for Rapture. Then, one opened WITH Rapture. Pretty strange. At this point, I don't know what to do. It's just all pretty dissapointing how ridiculous the install programs and coding is for these plugs are. Seems like a 10 year old wrote them.

I think DXi and VSTi use different methods for preset/patch storage, so I'm not sure if it's possible. If you load one instance each of the Dxi and VSTi version on your older machine and create a preset in the DXi version, does it display in he VSTi in that same session? I know it's not necessarily the same as choosing a preset, but it might point to a separation between the new versions. Hopefully some astute member may know of a way to go between the two that's quicker than writing them all down. Good luck.

Ok, so I re-installed DP 1.2 in the dxi format which deleted 1.5. Now my projects load with DP patches intact. But, I don't have DP 1.5 anymore which was a VST. Aren't the Dxi and VST separate things? Reading this in the knowledge base: Support has been discontinued for the following in Dimension Pro/LE 1.5 DXi RTAS Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) PowerPC based Macs So, How do I get DP 1.5 VST without corrupting the DP Dxi plug in my existing projects?

The Dxi Version will still work as far as I know. X1 still has lot's of DX and DXi's that run even in 64 bit. Look up a product called Effects Chainer that allows you run DX and DXi plugins in SONAR X1 64 bit or any DAW x64 for that matter. It's free and may allow you to load your DXi version and swap over presets. something else to note was that while DIM Pro and Rapture Version 1.2 were DXi and VST it was only the DX version that was 64 bit native. With 1.5 there is no Dx version and its a VST that has a 32 and 64 bit version. I always keep the version of SONAR that a project was created in and any associated plugins. If the plugins are at the no more support stage I'll either update the project version (if it's an ongoing project) to the latest SONAR (8.5.3) or bounce all the tracks and archive audio tracks and stems for general replay. It can be fun (or very important for a client) to go back to old projects. I make sure to keep all dry and processed tracks (audio and MIDI) with any plugins in situ. If there's the slightest hint that a particular project needs re-editing/processing to a great deal I just make sure to keep that version of the DAW it was created in. I don't have any projects that go back that far anymore and now I only go back to SONAR 8.3 for the obvious practical reasons. I keep an old PC that still has Cakewalk 7 to SONAR Xl (I think Win 98) on it and a few other bits and pieces and If need be I can run it to work on a really old project. Sort of a time machine for my clients. I always try to maintain a fully editable version of their project on original hardware. If that's not required then the very least I do is to archive the audio both dry and processed to and bounce and MIDI to audio as well. With a bit of forethought and some careful planning it's not too difficult to run the plugin upgrade/preset gauntlet but it's a fact of studio life that one time or another you're going to get caught. Good backups are a must. Actually I have to say that SONAR's backward compatability is one of it's strengths but of course new features get in the way of old tracks at times. Running a studio, whether amateur pro, project, home or whatever you need good procedures and a set of guidelines that determine your workflow. Alas good documentation is a must. Every project I do still starts off life as a written document that states client details, the basic concepts of the project, instrumentation, a description or workflow diagram. Something that illustrates the clients roadmap or mine depending on what kind of project it is. ThinK I got a bit off track sorry guys:

So, How do I get DP 1.5 VST without corrupting the DP Dxi plug in my existing projects? Just going from memory, again, I think someone had come up with a way to retain DP 1.2 Dxi while updating the VSTi version to 1.5. But what that method was (assuming it exists) I do not remember. I wonder if it's possible to back up the folders and registry keys for the DXi version and restore them after installing the VSTi... This might be a good question for the Instruments forum.
