Cut my teeth on Project5 : Need to upgrade
I've been using Project5 for a long time now, and given that it's no longer supported, I'm looking to upgrade to something current. Given my long history with Cakewalk (starting with Guitar Tracks some 12 years ago) I figure that the obvious step is SonarX1. I've been using Addictive Drums, Melodyne, and a handful of other plugins and I'd like to get more newer ones as well, and it would seem to me that SonarX1 would (or should) support these plugs in much the same way that Project5 does, though I don't know that to be true. Can anyone offer any info about the similarities in workflow/functionality between Project5 and SonarX1? Thanks

There is nothing similar about P5 and X1. X1 is a totally different creature. Depending on which version of X1 you are looking to get, you may want to look around at some less expensive, more stable options since you are using 3rd party plug-in's.

Actually, P5 and X1 share a lot of similar features ... Inspector Arpeggiator Browser Matrix Step Sequencer Of course there are differences, but there are indeed a lot of similarities. And I think you will find mixing and editing a lot more powerful in SONAR. SP

I still use Project 5, as well as Kinetic 2. In fact (although I haven't tried it out in X1 - just 8.5) you can either load 'em up as rewire clients or as VST's (using this : http://www.energy-xt.com/index.php?id=0115 ) right in SONAR. The Rewire-VST option works great in x64. There is a lot to be said for Project 5 - shame it got orphaned by the bakers. I always envisioned it evolving into a smaller/leaner "super VSTi". That being said, I think there are still lots of reasons to continue to use Project 5 - and would not hesitate to move up to X1 as well.

As much as I love the wares that Cakewalk produce, if I were comming from Project 5 I'd probably move on to Ableton Live. Just my opinion of course =) Good luck Cassini, have fun with X1...'tis a pleasure to work with =)

@chilldanny Well - although Project 5 does not get any updates any longer, and it is showing it's age a bit it is by no means unusable. It will run perfectly on Windows 7, and you can use the plugins and synths from Sonar X1 (I did not had any problems with those). As a extra "bonus" you can use the older synths (like nPulse) in Sonar X1 (also worked without problem, but as you can imagine there are no guarantees I can give with that). So - using Project 5 and Sonar X1 side by side is enough for me. No need to jump to Ableton Live (yes - I tried this software and appreciate some things - but not enough to fork out a lot of money for that piece of software). And indeed - a lot of things that where present in Project 5 are "transplanted" to X1 (take the matrix view as an example, although this was present in "8.5" also).

As others have said P5 still works fine. Many vsti projects I do for fun start in P5 and get rewired into SONAR. P5 is easier (the easiest!) software for me to create such midi and loop-based music in. SONAr is a more traditional enviroment for recording acoustic stuff and mixing. Rewire is a nice solution to get both. Once I figure out the midi parts I just freeze and copy the audio tracks to sonar. I still can't for the life of me figure out why they couldn't integrate P5 into SONAR w/ a native rewire etc. A lot of the changes to SONAR have been simply to replicate P5 functions w/ varying degrees of success. They just should have stapled it on and used it as the VSTi plugin. Oh well. That being said, SONAR essentials would give you rewire and mixing for cheap. But SONAR itself is getting easier and easier to work with vsti's/loops. Sometimes I just jump right in with SONAR and never turn on P5. @
