Midi Effects not working

Running X1c here. Highlighted a clip in a midi track, went to Process/Apply Effects - all options are greyed out ( see link ). http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1870114/Midi%20EffectsGreyed%20Out.JPG

What am I doing wrong here? Thanks, Shep

Gonna highjack my own thread - I have never been able to add images to my posts from day 1 here. What do I do to be able to do this? Thanks again - Shep

I'm not sure why it is greyed out under the Process menu but it is the same here.

You can, however, right click on the clip and select Insert Effect>MIDI Effects>your effect.

I find that only through right clicking a clip, or clicking the track or clip menus is this accessible. It's also not assignable to AlphaTrack, like Split, Bounce To Clips are no longer in the AlphaTrack options for F keys since they were all moved from the edit menu (8.5.3>).
Does this bother anyone else's workflow that uses AT? I had 4 different layouts for AT for recording midi, recording audio, mixing, and mastering. They aren't nearly as helpful now.

To answer your own thread hijack:

On the toolbar above the box where you enter text in your message, there's a Insert an Image (CTRL-G) icon, just to the right of the font combo boxes. I've done it for your image:

Thanks for the reply. I have no toolbar at all!?! Edit - actually, when I open the advanced reply page, it shows up for a split second and vanishes. What's up w/ that?

In X1, Process > Apply Effects now works the same with MIDI FX as with Audio FX; the FX has to first be set up in the FX bin of the track, and then it can be applied.

Thanks brundlefly. Have you any insight on getting Process midi effects, Bounce to clips, and Split controllable by AlphaTrack since they were moved from the edit menu in 8.5.3? I have to use the mouse so much more now, where it was just 1 click. Workflow slowdown...

Sorry, I've never used an Alphtrack, so I don't know how the mapping is set up. You might try PMing Bitflipper. IIRC, he was extolling the virtues of the Alhatrack in a recent thread, so he may have the answer.

Sorry, not me, either. I have long raved about the now-discontinued Tranzport from the same company, though.

These icons flash and disappear if you've got your viewing scaled at 125% (bottom right corner of IE).  Make that 100% or 150% and these icons will magically appear!  (This had me stumped for ages...)

(Yes, forget IE9 unless you want to go mad trying to use this board...)

It does not work for me either.  Driving me nuts.

Such a basic thing.  Select some midi notes, apply effect.

Whats the god damn deal Sonar?  I get the free effect of Razor notes hanging for ever so that is a bonus.

What am I doing wrong here?

Sorry, Shep, I thought this was an AlphaTrack problem and therefore thought I had nothing to contribute. Then I looked at your OP and the screenshot and realized what the problem is. Brundlefly answered it in post #8: "apply effects" means to destructively apply whatever is in the fx bin, whether it's an audio or a MIDI track. If there are no effects in the fx bin, the menu selection to apply effects will be disabled.

    (1) Make sure you're using the Smart tool (click the star)
    (2) In piano roll view, lasso (or Ctrl left click if they're not all adjacent) the MIDI notes you want to involve.
    (3) Move the PRV out the way a bit so you can see the track.
    (4) Right click on the part of the track that is shaded because of having made the selection in (1) above.
    (5) From the right click popup list, select Process Effect, MIDI FX, Cakewalk FX, etc.

A couple other threads have pointed out recently that you can get there in the PRV by right-clicking with the Select tool to get the context menu.

Oops, yes forgot that one, thanks brundlefly!
That method enables you to stay in PRV without having to go and right click on the track:
    (1) SAME - Make sure you're using the Smart tool (click the star)
    (2) SAME - In piano roll view, lasso (or Ctrl left click if they're not all adjacent) the MIDI notes you want to involve.
    (3) Click on the select tool (arrow) top right of screen, or press the mouse middle button to bring up the tool selector.
    (4) Right click on an empty part of the PRV.
    (5) From the right click popup list, select MIDI plugins, Cakewalk FX, etc.

    - You could also start at (1) with the Select tool, but I work all the time with the Smart tool as default.
    - Don't forget of course when opening the PRV, to first click on a blank area where there aren't any notes in order to deselect all notes which is the default when opening PRV in X1.  Cakewalk cling to this is an advance on all previous versions when it patently isn't.  You go into PRV to do surgery on some notes, not all.  If you want to work on all of them you don't need to open the PRV.  It would be far more sensible if this behaviour was user-definable in the Preferences, MIDI section.

A couple of thoughts on this (that I've posted before):

I often quantize entire tracks in the PRV so I can see how the notes move, and spot notes that move the wrong way or too far because they were way off the intended timing or the quantize interval is wrong for a couple measures that have triplets or dotted notes in them.

I've always found it to be a pain that you have to either lasso everything, or swipe through the keyboard to Select All, because Ctrl-A will select everything in the project. So for me having all notes selected is a step forward, though I admit it took some re-training to remember to de-select them when I just want to move one note (lassoing automatically de-selects everything when you click to start the lasso, so that's not a problem). But I agree it would make sense to have it be a preference.

I my perfect world, the PRV would come up with nothing selected, and Ctrl-A would select only notes in tracks enabled for editing in the PRV. I can't recall if I ever got around to making that a feature request.
