OK, I'll bite... HP is selling off their PC division, so if I have to choose I choose Dell. Granted I build my own PCs so I wouldn't buy a Dell either because I'd much rather put the stuff in it I want and not have to pay for the customization prices (and any bloatware) a brand PC company puts on a machine. That is my answer. Tom

A better question would be "What is the best computer for my specific needs and budget?" Then define what those needs are. Regarding which brand is better, it's difficult to make that sort blanket statement about an entire brand. First of all, most of the major brand names are offering a wide range computers, from inexpensive/entry-level up to high-end/expensive. Secondly, with regards to laptops, it's even more confusing as overall quality can vary drastically from one model to the next within the same brand. Truth is, most major brand name laptop "manufacturers" don't really design/manufacturer their own laptops, but contract one of a handful of relatively unknown (at least to the retail world) of Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), then paste their label/support/marketing on top of it. And finally, with respect to major brand name computers, rest assured they are most often designed with lowest cost and maximum profit in mind. Nothing wrong with that at all -- unless you're in the market for a computer to serve as the foundation of your DAW studio. The cost cutting leads to corner cutting which typically results in a computer that can of course run Sonar, just not run it to its maximum potential. DAW users are a very small niche market in the grand scheme of major brand name computer manufacturing, and our very specific needs aren't often met by an off-the-shelf brand name computer -- especially when you want to push the machine to it's limits with maximum track counts, effects plug-ins, and lowest possible latency. The good news is that there are companies who specialize in designing, building (and most importantly SUPPORTING) computers for DAW use. Two of them are very active on this forum and come highly recommended by forum users. If what you want is the BEST computer for DAW use, you owe it to yourself to at least contact Scott at ADK Pro Audio and/or Jim at Studio Cat to see what they have to offer. I've been using a Sony VAIO laptop for business for little over a year now and really like it a lot because it has a 14 inch display at 1600x900 screen resolution - tough to find in a small laptop, and it only cost me $1k at Best Buy. I'd say this Sony laptop I have is the best PC I've owned. From my experience as a Network Administrator and computer consultant, based on reliability and stability and number of support issues, between Dell and HP, I would choose an HP laptop over a Dell laptop, but choose a Dell desktop over an HP desktop. For music production, I use a PCAudioLabs Rok Box MC 7x. I hope that helps.

If I needed a PC for business/office use, I would choose Dell. But if I want one for specialist use, I would build it myself.

If you check around you will find that some have gotten either Dell or HP to "work," but others report major problems (particularly with Dell). For audio use, if you plan on doing only very small projects, with very few tracks, you likely will have success. But, if you are looking to eventually do larger projects, with many synths, VST samples, and high track counts, a cheap Dell, HP, or any other cheap PC, will simply not cut it. As Houndawg already commented: what are your intended uses? Only after you have made a real attempt to answer that question can you begin to answer what PC might be "best". Depending on your intended use, your true need could vary quite widely. Finally, if you have the budget, and are looking at long-term heavy intense use, then, I would suggest buying a custom DAW from either Scott or Jim (Scott built mine). Again though, it all depends on your ultimate intended intended use.
