X1 Essential Having Problem With MIDI

We are recording everything fine but when I try to use MIDI, I can't get it to work at all. The keyboard is a Yamaha YPG-630(?), and I'm using Yamaha DTXpess II electronic drums. I haven't tried the drums yet but I installed the drivers for the keyboard and I've tried all I know to to do and still nothing. I had a friend, who records with Protools, come and try to help solve the problem but he couldn't figure it out either. Could someone PLEASE lay down, from start to finish, how I'm to get MIDI to work. I'm new to the world of MIDI and this is turning out to be one heck of a learning experience! It's probably ONE simple little thing I'm leaving out. Just got the drums last night so I'll tackle those today. Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum!
It would be easier to start if we knew a little what you have already tried and what you are trying to do..

    Have you done the tutorials?

If you want to record MIDI (which is only playing instructions, not sound) and then hear the music played with your keyboards sounds, you need to record from Yamahas MIDI-out to a MIDI-track in SONAR. The output of the MIDI track must be your keyboard. If you then want to record the MIDI-composition and your keyboards sounds, you must do that through the audio-out of the keyboard to an audio track in SONAR.

That principle is the same in all DAWs.

Why should someone explain it from start to finish here, when you have 1500 pages of instructions plus the tutorials on your DVD? You need to do your own homework.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Yeah, okay. I did the tutorials and read all the stuff in the instructions. I don't suppose I need a start to finish guide here but I'm just lost. I know how to record the keyboards sounds. That's easy. I'm trying to tap into the sounds that's in Sonar. I'm hooking up the MIDI cables and everything, just like THE INSTRUCTIONS say to do. I understand that the MIDI will be in one track but the actual "recording instrument" will be in a seperate track. But Sonar isn't giving me any response to the keyboard as a MIDI controller. It's showing the keyboard is hooked up but nothing happens. I've spent a month trying to figure this out. But thanks for your help, I'll go do my homework...

You are talking about using soft synths. You haven't made it clear that you have inserted a soft synth properly. Until you provide more detailed information as to exactly what you are doing, the simplest explanation for your problem is that you don't know how to properly insert and use soft synths. I suggest going into the manual and Help file and read up on using soft synths.
