Simply Entitled "M"

Hi Everyone,

I finally got a chance to mix down one of my first compositions and was wondering what everyone thinks.  It is posted on one of my web sites so please don't think I am asking about my web site.  I just want to know about the song.  I have been wanting to get back to recording for a while now and I am finally getting time.

I have just entitled this song M.  Here's the Link http://www.sirgo.com/CakewalkSonarX1.aspx. This is to the page the song is on and it has a player in it.
You have to scroll down a bit to find the player but it is there.

Here is a straight link to the song itself if you do not need a player.  http://www.sirgo.com/portals/0/users/003/03/3/m2.mp3

Many thanks to anyone who has input.

Thanks,
Tom

Overall well done.  I thought there was really nice playing, and I'm impressed you made the girl's voice with a synth.  That being said, I didn't always feel like it went perfectly with the rest of the song.

You might also think about widing your stereo field a bit.

Finally, very nice for a half a day's work.

Thanks for the Critique. Yeah, I have been wondering about the female vocal parts myself. I have been tossed back and forth on that. Widening the stereo field is a comment I have heard before on this so I am definitely looking into that. I think part of the issue there is the setup of my control room. I am going to try and reposition a few things and then mix it again. Thanks for the input. Really appreciated.

i agree with losing the 'female' vocals. some nice guitar playing though. bass could be a little more distinct. interesting idea.

Some of the things I use to widen the stereo field (besides normal panning of course)

    1.   stereo effects like waves doubler
    2.  delays etc that hit both sides (or the oppostite side) of the field
    3.  Sound Toys panman
    4.  Izotope's Ozone mastering pluging (they have a stereo widener a little goes a long way)

Also on occasion I will manually do automation as well for things like high hat etc.   Switching from side to side.  This can be an interesting effect.

I haven't looked into panman or Ozone before.  Thanks for the tips.  I will take a look at those.

Do you find one preferable over the other or are they both distinct?

I agree too.  It seems like that is the general consensus and I didn't really like them all that much anyways.  When I recorded the bass, I had just bought the bass about a week before so I am still learning what is the best mix for it.

Thanks for the insight.  Version 2 will be improved with everyones input.

panman and ozone work in very different ways.  panman rotates the pan from one side to another.  Similiar to a delay ping pong effect.  So it might change every quarter note etc

Ozone uses really complicated math stuff to trick your ears into thinking that the stereo field is wider than it really is.  I would assume it's probably changing sides in millsecons or something like that.

panman is more appropirate for an instrument, whereas ozone can also be used on on the whole track.

You ever seen the movie "M" directed by Fritz Lang?  That is the first thing I tohught of when I saw your title.

Really great guitar playing.  Having those vocals so far in the background with so much reverb or "space" was a little off putting to me but it also could be considred just a good effect.  Really no rules I know.  I would of liked to of seen more work with the drums but other than that a nice listen overall :)

    Not a bad first project.

Sounds like you're off to a good start with X1.

Good comments above so I'm not going to add anything else at this point.

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions.  I will be trying out the panman and ozone suggestions as well as doing a remix hopefully this weekend.  Watch out for a remix.

Nice song though I'll have to agree with most of the other comments. Make better use of stereo field. Otherwise it all mushes together. =)

Well, I checked out the demos of the tools Matthew mentioned and I have to admit, I now know why he uses both.  They are great tools.

I am going to wait until I can purchase those tools and then I am going to complete my mix.  They are really nice.
