Sidechain/Keying in Sonar 6PE

I'm working out of my Sonar Power Guide to learn how to send audio tracks to a compressor or a gate.  The guide, which is for Sonar 8, makes it seem very easy to set everything up.  Enable a compressor/gate on the target track then insert a send on the audio track that you want to use to control the compressor/gate.  The problem is when I go to insert a send, there is no option to send the track to the effect.  I am using the Sonitus FX Compressor and Gate.

I assume that setting this up in Sonar 6 PE is different from Sonar 8.  Would anyone be able to help me with this?  I've checked the helps and tutorials but I haven't found any answers yet.

Thanks.

Sidechaining was introduced in SONAR 7, IIRC.

Support for sidechaining required an update to the Sonitus compressor and gate, too. There was an issue in one version where the new DLLs had a lower internal version number than the earlier ones, preventing the installer from replacing the old ones. I went through that and had to manually update the DLLs to get sidechain functionality.

Thanks bitflipper that's what I feared the most.

Since I need to upgrade my DAW I may go with Sonar 8 or x1.  I'm kind of worried about getting x1 since I know next to nothing about it.  I always thought it was a stripped down version of Sonar for some reason.  If I decided to go with either Sonar 8 or x1 would my current project files be compatible with either of them?

SONAR 8 is no longer offered for sale by Cakewalk. However, there are a few original boxed copies available online. Check eBay, but do it quickly before they're all gone - or the sellers realize the value of a dwindling inventory and jack up the prices. If you can score a legit copy of 8.5 Producer that's your best bet. And yes, your S6 projects will load up just fine (and will in X1,too).

Certainly not stripped down, but it does look that way when you look at the new interface, tools that were readily accessable from buttons now need to be launched from menus or shortcut keys.

While there is a lot talk of features being removed its often a case of the feature is there but you have to access it differently, or it works in a different way.

Another option is to try the db-Audioware dB-D Dynamics Processor ($39 USD)...

It was the solution that many used before SONAR had its own sidechain support.  The the idea here is that you put an instance of the plug in the track you want controlled (ducked, compressed, whatever) and one in the track you want to use as the sidechain key signal.  The two instances then handle the signal routing themselves...kinda behind the host's back.  They also have a more expensive "Sidechain Compressor" that came out after SONAR got its own sidechain support.  I don't know a thing about it, so I can't recommend it per se.

If it were me...I'd go ahead and go with X1.  I keep all previous versions on my machines "just in case"...but I've only gone back (to 8.5) once because of a scoring problem that has since been addressed in a subsequent update.
