Ubuntu ?

Is anyone using the Ubuntu OS. IT looks interesting and I am thinking about trying it on a reformatted drive in my old laptop, a Dell 5150. It isa P4 2.8mhz maxed at 1g of RAM but I am still thinking about giving it a try but I am not sure how things will work. It says it is open source and it is free so.... it should at least be interesting.

Is anyone using it? http://www.ubuntu.com/

Yes. I have run it on one of my desktops at home for several years. Before that, I was running Gentoo.

When someone I know gets a new computer and doesn't want their old one, I take it an install Linux :-)

If you are just curious about it, download the live cd ISO, burn it on a CD and boot it up. This way you can try it out without having the commitment of installing it on a hard drive. If you don't like it, remove the CD and reboot and you are back to where you were.

If you want something that looks more like MS Windows, install Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE desktop). Ubuntu use to use Gnome (which is my preferred) but the default is now Unity. At the GUI login prompt, you can select "Ubuntu Classic" and run Gnome. Heck, give them all try!

    Have fun!

Thanks, I will probaby give it a try. From what I understand I wont be able to run any CW products or other DAWs on it. I think I saw that Audacity will run on it... I cold be wrong though, I was completely unaware of Ubantu until this morning.
I wonder if yo could take a moment to either tell me why I would stand to gain by using it other than no worries about getting a computer virus. It is Linux? If you don't have time to fill in the blanks (I have a lot of them) maybe you can point me somewhere so I can read and learn what I would use it for and why it would be better at anything than W7. I'll look around myself in the meantime.
    Thanks,

I found ubantuforums.org and I just read something interesting... Ubantu/Linux has no registry and no ActiveX... hmmm. Still, I have not done any programming since I ditched the Vic-20 and the Commodore-64... and that wasn't really programming. The limit of my knowledge of computer usage (other than the obvious... surfing and using programs) is that I learned to clean a computer. I can use Hikackthis, MAlwarebytes, etc and clean all the malware etc off a computer. I learned that because of having to clean up my own mess... but if Linux is great for programmers, I have neither the time nor the attention span to learn anything that I don't have to learn. Between, X1, children, grandchildren, and 90yo+ parents... and still trying to run a business, and life (wait.. what life?) my time is used up.

I am interested if Ubantu can add to my enjoyment without adding frustration or difficulty and I like that it seems to be more secure.

What about privacy, or is that simply a browser thing?

and... do you know if X1 might run on it, does it handle latency better that W7? Does it use drivers for hardware like Windows or are most things just plug and play... sorry I am so ignorant but if someone already knows these things it would be nice to not have to spend a bunch of time trying to figure it all out... then find out I only thought I was right.. laff.

Is there a chance I might squeeze more out of a P4 2.8mhz machine with 1G of RAM by using Ubantu? Again, I apologize for my total ignorance in this area.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Julien,

Based on your description of your interests, etc. I would say that you are not a good candidate for a Linux user.  I say this as a user for 15 years and a fan of Linux for programming and scientific/engineering work --- and posting from Ubuntu right now.  IMO you would find it quite frustrating.

    Regards,
    Dave Clark

I wasn't sure why you wanted to run Linux. If it wasout of curiosity and for the free aspect, then give the Live CD a shot. However, if you think you will get some advantage using it to run Sonar, then I agree with DaveClark.
