Building a guitar aux. cabinet

I have a Behringer GMX 110 amp, which (in the manual) says I can plug in a aux. speaker (1 by 30 W 4 ohms). One question: In the search for better sound is it worth building an aux. speaker cabinet and use the Behringer to power it? Another question: If I do build the speaker cabinet, what should I use? . One 12" speaker Two 10" speakers One 12" speaker and a piezo mid range? Thanks! Wayne I have a recent post asking some of the same info. I am trying to build it right the first time, so I am hoping to get some more opinions. Thanks to those two that replied to my first thread.

    TIME IS MONEY
    AND MONEY I SERVE

    LOL

    POINT BEING......
for me, time is money, and the time it would take me to build a decent cabinet, would cost more than just buying a really well made but inexpensive cabinet with a speaker ready to go.

My advice would be to carry the amp and your guitar to a music store that has a number of cabinets.

Plug in and try them out.

It is impossible to answer your original question since it is a matter of taste.

there are too many options to say this is better than that. And 4 different brands of speaks and even the different models from the same company will all sound different and they will each sound different based on the cabinet it's in. Open back, closed back, large, small, materials, the list goes on.

What I can say is read and apply line one again, and have fun.

Oh yeah... I'm with Bat. I have built a few cabs in my day, and the ones that were manufactured by someone other than me were always the best deals and sounded better too, not counting how they looked. I buy factory stuff these days.

    Hey Mike...
I really like the quality of the work you do in making your cabinets. They are, without a doubt, works of art unto themselves.

But hey..... not all of us can do the dove tailing or buy the jigs to do it and learn the tricks of the trade so to speak just to build one cabinet.
While I do appreciate that sort of craftsmanship... I enjoyed watching Norm Abrams working on his New Yankee Workshop projects..... most of us would prefer to simply buy it already assembled....

Sadly, it is cheaper and easier for me and others, to buy one than to build it to the level of expertise that your handy work exhibits.

    Pretty work!

Great answer Mike. I have an old Fender Princeton and the original 10" was bagged, After a little digging around I ordered a Vintage 10 from Celeston. It was more or less designed to go in an amp like the Princeton and is a perfect match. So like Mike say's it's part art and science to build good sounding guitar amps. But that said, I also ordered a 12" Greenback at the same time and built a simple plywood box that matched the Princeton's dimensions,, no science involved here. I built it closed back so it would have a completely different sound than the open back Fender. It's very fat ( bass) sounding, Amazing how much like a Marshall adding the same speaker accomplished . So by simply moving the mike between the 2 speakers I can get a different tone. Buy one, or build one. It's up to you, My cabinet is not as well built as Mikes, I used butt joints and lots of glue ha ha,,, I have bought the original Fender grill cloth and even a matching Logo. Priceless.

i dont care for bare wood cabs...

unless they're just sitting in someone's living room!
    heheh

    i want tolex.

beefy road worthy clean shiny tolex.

and mike, that cab looks very well made, but there's no way to know what it sounds like without hearing it, so i can't comment on that part.

i know that things that make classic cabinets like older marshalls, bogner, boogie, etc... so good, is the way the corners are joined, the way the plys are put together, etc, etc...

and i could never build one like the avatar i have....

there will always be folks that have the tools and skills to do the DIY thing...

but i'm not one of them.
and again, put a dollar figure on your time

Mike, I'm guessing you'd be visiting either High Point or Thomasville, or close to those towns. Depending on when you come and what my schedule is, let me know if you're interested and shoot me an email or PM me here and we could maybe have lunch or something.

The furniture capital is not but 2 hrs or so from here.... If the schedule is slow, it's possible I could get away  to meet you.

Well, I am going to build a cabinet. Should order speakers next week after I get paid. Anyways going to build a 24" wide by 12" deep by 18" high cabinet. I am going to use two 10" Eminence speakers ("Rajin Cajun" and a "Copperhead") I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all the input and words of wisdom. Wayne

Wel if you must build your ownl, fingerjoint and solid pine... or some other tonewood. Get a plan for a convertable cab openback/closed back. Wire it with a three way switch so you can run it with both speakers or either one of the two. If you want to wire it stereo/mono build a partition between the speakers. If you wire is so you can use both speakers or either speaker, study and plan the ohms of the speakers and how the ohms will change according to how the wiring is done or is changed when switching. Some amps run a 4 ohm minimum, some 8 ohm minimum, and some 16 ohm minimum. Some. like the Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb will take a 2 ohm minimum... I say this because you have this amp now but if you build a cab you are likely to always have it and I would think that you would want it to be as flexable as possible. I like 2 Rajin Cajuns but the Texas Heat and the Gov'ner are cool too but they are 12s.

Good luck... but think it out and perhaps have a talk with Ted Weber about the possibilities. He is a good guy and is accessable.

Mr. Weber has, unfortunately, passed away but his company remains run, to the best of my knowledge, by his family.

Wow... I am sorry to hear that. I had no idea. I used to communicate with him often and he was a great guy that would always take the time to answer any question.
