BSOD when closing Win 7 first time after installing X1c, same thing with build 246
Just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this, or perhaps it is peculiar to my interface; the Tascam FW-1884. Here's what happened, first with build 246 and then with X1c. Both times I let the Sonar installer auto-launch after installation. Both times when I closed Win 7 (not when I closed Sonar) I got the BSOD. When Win 7 re-started I got the "Windows has recovered, etc", so I shut down and re-started Windows again and all seems well both times. Just a Tascam issue? or have others experienced the same thing? Would have searched the forum, but we all know how well that works. TIA

I put X1C on my laptop (guinea pig) before trying it on the main studio ...so all seemed OK when I opened a project ... I made some small changes and hit "control +s" to save and the program shutdown and went BSOD. After that episode for the 3 other times uon starting the laptop it would be basically BSOD with the following error: 0XC000000e The boot section failed because ...saying some kind of component was missing and to get my windows 7 install disk... Well I went to "continue..." w/o and it started up. It did this probably 3 or 4 times before it suddenly started behaving normally ...with me doing nothing else???...that was several months ago ..whenever "c" came out anyway. So I have not updated my main studio because of this concern...I did not post the problem..did not see anything even close to my issue posted..but could not resist the similarities of our issues. I hope it is a one off experience for us both...but what to do about my main studio upgrade?? I don't know..stalled in my tracks! jonny3d

Johnny, The BSOD on closing Windows after the 246 QF and X1c was a 1 shot deal each time. I think if I had re-started Windows prior to opening X1b 246, and then X1c, I would have been all right. For you here is what I would do. Burn a Win 7 image of your C drive. Install X1c. Re-boot. Open Sonar. If you are not happy with X1c then restore the pre-X1c image that you made. Other than the time it takes to restore the saved image you have nothing to lose. These caveats; Do not install anything else until you're sure you're happy. If you save any pre-sets to effects or Vst's, export them BEFORE restore. And MOST IMPORTANT, you should be burning images on a regular basis. Its the road home anytime Windows, or an app goes sideways. Don't fear the Reaper!

TIA I'm not a fan of tascam's drivers. tascam makes great hardware as long as it doesn't require software to run it. BSOD when closing sonar is very likely a driver issue, but most importantly all BSODs come with information about what caused the problem. what does the Blue screen tell you was the cause of the problem? it's always in the first couple of lines of the screen.

Beagle, It was gone so quickly I didn't catch it. There are some issues with Tascam, no doubt about. The biggest issue was/is getting them to actually release the drivers that Frontier writes for the 1884, but that won't be a problem in the future as Tascam has decided to no longer support the 1884 past Win 7 After the initial BSOD everything has worked fine. Didn't do this on X1, patch a or b. BUT, there was a "noise" issue if "Play effect tails after stopping" wasn't checked after X1a (maybe b, can't remember). QF 246 "solved" that, but at the expense of the BSOD without a re-boot? That's kind of my diagnosis, and since C included a, b and all the QF's.... Just curious if any other hardware configs had a similar issue. I'm of the opinion that some hardware configs (not necessarily only audio interfaces) are the culprit behind X1 being "the bomb" for some, and "the curse" for others. Just my nickel.98's worth.

Tom - I just saw another post by bapu who said he has the Tascam FW-1884 working but that he had problems with it initially because of his firewire card. the problems he had are not the same as the problems you are describing, but I certainly would consider that to be an issue.

Beagle, I'm pretty sure it was some kind of driver issue, perhaps related to the mother board TI chipsets. Gigabyte boards on my desktop (that was the X1c install) and DAW (that's the X1b build 246 install). With all the "issues" still being discussed I haven't updated to X1c on the StudioCat yet. I installed X1c to the desktop for testing. After that post install crash, both systems (remember this happened after the 246 install on the DAW as well) everything is running fine on both systems. I guess I will answer my own question by NOT launching Sonar without re-booting first. Thanks for the heads up! Should have asked Bapu and Riojazz if they had any issues... Tom

Tom, I have not encountered that problem. I am on X1c. FWIW I have swapped out my mobo for an ASUS as my Z68 mobo from Gigabyte was having terrible DPC Latency issues when the FW-1884 was turned on. If there is anything you want me to test just holler OK?

Bapu, Thanks for the heads up. I won't jump to X1c until I return from the road in November. Both systems are (were when I left anyway) running fine. Just the one time BSOD closing Windows on the initial run of Sonar after the update. I'll have to re-run the DPC test on the DAW when I get home just to be sure the on board chips are up to snuff. Thanks again, Tom

Tom, yes, I had a BSOD once after installing X1C, and after that all was fine so I ignored it and didn't think to report it. I use a utility called BlueScreenView that will show you the cause of a BSOD after the fact, and it fingered the FW-1884 driver. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html To the poster who commented on software from Tascam, the drivers for the FW-1884 are actually written by Frontier Design, the same folks who brought you the Tranzport and AlphaTrack. Frontier Design is the hero in several stories we could tell you about Tascam, but I won't hijack the thread to go there now.
