latency--PROBLEM SOLVED

You guys have probably answered latency questions a hundred times.  Something has changed for me and I can't get a handle on it.  Since installation of X1, I have had no latency problems whatsoever.  Rock solid.  But now (the last day or so), when I open a project, and set up to record, I'm getting latency.  This is on projects that had no previous problem.  When I put the track in record and light the input echo button, I hear no latency in the monitor, but once I start playback, there it is.  If I stop playback, the latency is still there.  If I turn off input echo, then turn it on again, it returns to normal (inaudible) latency.  But as soon as I start playback, there it is again.

This is happening on projects with as few as 2 (!) tracks, and as many as 16-20.

Yes.  I have tried rebooting.

If it helps, I am running Win 7, 64-bit, and my card is an M-audio Audiophile USB.  I am running ASIO.  The problem persists when I change to WDM.

The latency slider in the ASIO panel is set to minimum.

Any ideas?

are you sure the card is still in asio mode ? look in audio preferences and make sure your onboard is unticked.. if it's not the card can't use asio.

if you unplugged it and put it in a different USB that might have caused issues. I used to have issues with my ozone, where I'd have to unplug / uninstall (use ccleaner) / install / reboot / plug ozone back in , every say 3-4 months. Can't speak for the unit you have but I dropped the ozone as their drivers for it didn't work in 64 bit.

also in windows / control panel, whats your default soundcard ? make it the realtek etc .

have a look at make sure it's keeping the settings in m-audio's control panel. e.g. buffers , you might find it's too low.. needs up'ing.

is the project the same rate .e.g. 16 bit or 24 bit and have you changed anything ?

there was a windows update the other day, such things have been known to throw devices.. you have auto update on?

I'd say contact them for support, but in my case 6 emails (telling them exactly how to fix the problem) and 2 none working drivers later made me drop them for a better rival.

The latency slider in the ASIO panel is set to minimum

    That slider is for WDM.
All you need to do is click the ASIO panel and lower your ASIO buffer to 32 or 64 or 96 or 128 or 256

I was gonna say, ASIO does not have the slider-

I identified and solved the problem.  The gremlin was the presence if Izotope Nectar open somewhere in the project.  It did not matter if it was on the track I was recording on or not.  If the plug was open anywhere in the project, it caused a delay in the monitored audio.  I believe the problem is that Nectar eats a lot of resource and was pushing the computer past its limit, given my low-latency settings.  Once I turned Nectar off, everything went normal.  I did not have to remove the plug, only to disable it in each track it was present on.

I verified this on several projects and am 100% satisfied that I have identified the problem.

Thanks to all who offered their help....

BTW...for my particular interface (M-audio) the ASIO panel does indeed have a slider.  You click on the "ASIO Panel" button and a slider appears.  The range is from 128 samples to 4096 samples.  That is the only option available in the panel.

What you're experiencing is Plug-in Delay Compensation. It's not a load issue per se. It's that some plugs need an additional lookahead buffer to process audio. The delay caused by that extra buffer is reported to the SONAR, and SONAR delays all other tracks to maintain playback sync with the track delayed by the plugin.

There is a PDC Override button in the Control Bar that will disable PDC on input monitored tracks (assuming the PDC plugin is on some other track) so you can monitor without latency. But it's best to avoid using plugs that need PDC until you're done tracking, and have moved on to mixing where the added latency isn't an issue.

Wow I didn't think of mentioning some plugins introduce latency as well. I have only experienced it with plugins used for mixing, but low and behold, Nectar does it as well!

Well done finding the culprit ;)
