Old Sonar User - New X1 User (need help!)
Hey everyone... I've been using Sonar for many many years. I upgraded from 7 Producer to X1 Producer this weekend. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet but I've encountered some problems. I can't get any midi to work. I run some softsynths in the synth rack and nothing... no signal. I rewired into reason and the midi is fine in reason but sonar gets to signal from reason through the rewire. I am using a brand new Open Labs Miko LXD Gen 6. I have a Gen 5 in my studio right now with Sonar 7 and everything runs fine. I've double checked the MIDI device settings and I assume they are correct. They are the same as the unit that's in my studio. Aside from that, I'm having a hard time finding buttons etc in the interface... it'll take some getting used to I guess. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

the first thing, check your getting midi activity next to the clock in the right corner of windows.. the piano icon will light if your getting a note in / out. what version of sonar you starting / what OS is that thing.. remember 64 bit rewire isn't possible yet.. so using 32 bit sonar it will work, hopefully thats the case. as for vst's.. what synth ? remember some you have to open up the GUI and give a patch.. otherwise it'll do an impression of Simon & Garfunkel (the sound of silence).. other obvious things is make sure nothing is muted. try to record midi , see if you can even do that. press 0 (not zero) in the synth rack to bring up the options for a synth.. make sure you have actually said to ouptut audio. you have set up the asio or WDM driver side of things also in the audio setup?

Hey, thanks for all the advice! The piano icon is lighting up when i strike a key. I have sonar 7 PE on one rig that is fine and Sonar X1PE on another rig that isn't working properly. I did install the 32 bit sonar... and its' every synth that wont function. The weird thing is, if I open a previous project with synths and reason I am able to play and get midi activity as if there were no problem. Sounds from reason rewire into sonar and synths get notes sent and everything is fine. But when I start a new project no midi will work whatsoever and when I rewire reason, reason opens and I can get sound and activity but it will not show up on the meters in sonar. Nothing is muted. I'm stumped. p.s. How do I activate the "show all" function in each track so I can see the effects bin and where outputs are being sent etc? I can't find it anywhere!

Thanks stevec! Right infront of my face the whole time! I've literally been playing with sonar all day and still cant come up with a solution why nothing in the synth rack works! I use midi 90% of the time so this really has me bummed.

So I figured it out! When inserting the synth, the box marked "midi source" was not checked. I checked it and the sounds play beautifully. So hopefully that helps someone else in the future. I wish that was my only problem but it's not... Now I'm faced with another big problem. A few older projects contain dimension pro and refx vanguard. I use massive, nexus, sylenth, omnisphere etc... All those synths open in older projects no problem but when I made the move to x1 on a new computer I installed them all again but dimension pro and vanguard are not recognized and therefor do not load. But in a new project I can add them and they play fine? Any ideas?

Open the Plugin Manager and make sure their paths are included in the search paths, then scan again.

Update: My new X1 system opens "dimension pro" perfectly fine. But it doesn't open "pro." Apparently my other system with sonar 7 had 2 "dimension pros" installed but its really just the same thing. When I go to insert a synth I had the option of adding "dimension pro" in one vst folder and "dimension pro" in another vst folder. When adding one of the dimension pro's, it says dimension pro on the vst but the other only says pro. They are the same thing with the same sounds but x1 wont open anything I used "pro" for. I didn't realize i was adding dimension pro 2 different ways. Any idea what in god's name is going on? I've been at this with a friend who is great with this stuff and we are stumped. It's confusing and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing a great job explaining it. Please let me know if you have any specific questions. Edit: Sorry to keep posting but I keep realizing new things. I thing I've pinpointed the problem. Sonar 7 has Dimension Pro installed as version 1.2 and Sonar X1 has it installed as version 1.5. Could it be that the second instance of dimension pro I was using by accident was the dxi version and therefor won't open in X1 because DXI isn't supported in 1.5?? Make any sense?? If that's the case, what can I do??

Insert a new instance of Dimension Pro / Copy your midi data from your silent track / Select Preset / Resave. Sometimes it's just easier to use the working synth rather than taking all the time to diagnose and troubleshoot. (I'm just sayin' .... ) HTH Vernon

That thought crossed my mind... The only problem is I have so many older projects and to go through them all to see which has dimension on it isn't practical. Who knows when I'll have to reopen a beat for a mixdown for a client in the future. I would do it as I go but I was planning on selling my first rig... so if I did that I wouldn't be able to reference it to see what preset was used so I'm able to make the switch on the second rig. Cakewalk support just got back to me and agreed with my diagnosis of it's because a few older projects were using dim pro as a directx plugin. So, he said to rectify the situation, I'd have to uninstall dim pro 1.5 and reinstall 1.2 and then patch in 1.5. 2 problems with that... I'm not sure what he means by "patch in" 1.5 and I don't have the original dim pro disc. I bought my first Miko with sonar 7 preinstalled on it.
