Two Steps from Hell

Two Steps from Hell is a music-production company in San Francisco Los Angeles that specializes in movie trailer music. (Could that be the ultimate dream job? Short of Quality Control at the Bunny Ranch, anyway.)

We all love epic trailer music and these guys are among the very best in the business. And who knew but they have albums! Give it a listen on Amazon. Just bought "Invincible" and digging it.

I think this will be great music to listen to while doing mundane tasks such as lawn-mowing. (If I were 30 years younger it would also be good accompaniment for bedroom activities, too. Take that, Kenny G.)

Interesting. I listened to a little bit of the first track. I'll take a more serious listen later.

Bitflipper, do you use any of EWQL's sample libraries?  Nick (and now Tom) have been especially involved in their recent releases.

Not an EastWest guy. Don't do dongles. Love the symphonic orchestra products though.

I have a free version of EWQL.. (Silver lite? maybe) that they were giving away for free last year. Runs without a dongle although it has a very limited sound set in it, the ones it does have sound really good.

I have hesitated to buy the full version. I just don't do that much orchestrated stuff if you know what I mean, to justify the cost.

Now I know why every movie trailer sounds the same. ;-)

Does anyone know who did the theme song for 30 Rock?

Here you can view some of the trailers that used the aforementioned music, so you can see/hear them in their original context. I like them better naked.

The EWQLSO connection made me wonder about what kinds of libraries, if any, were used. According to the composer "All the samples and live performances in the track are completely custom". Sorry, no standard library that you and I can buy.

Yeah, although Tom is involved in creating the new EWQL libraries, he has his own custom libraries for what he does (great way to set yourself apart from everybody else).

Another example was the "Prague" custom library.  A number of top end samples users pooled their resources and created their own custom library by privately hiring an orchestra to create it.  Of course, I don't live in that land, or even on the same continent/planet/universe.  But, it does give a good idea of what one is truly up against should one desire to go in that direction professionally.

Many commercial libraries started life as custom projects. Alicia's Keys was commissioned by Alicia Keys for her own use so she could carry a virtual copy of her own piano on the road. Miroslav Philharmonik started as a custom library commissioned by Miroslav Vitous for his own use.

Somebody who owns a set of useful samples is likely to realize their value beyond their own proprietary use, and licensing them is an easy way to recoup some of the investment. Plus, the uniqueness wears off after awhile anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if these custom libraries don't eventually show up someday as something like "The EastWest Epic Trailer Package".

Plus, I'm sure some metal band in Helsinki has already sampled 2 Steps' Invincible album for uncredited use in some future masterpiece.

Well, since that's probably been done, I'll try to figure out a way to simply annoy Mooch with it.
