Are Sonar X1 software mods potentially harmful?

Some very gifted code writers have come up with a few great additions to Sonar. I really appreciate their willingness to share these mods with the rest of us. I like a lot of what they have done but I question the effect adding a mod might have on my system stability. Cakewalk has stated that they are unwilling to verify the stability of X1c if the end user has added a mod. This would seem to imply that the mods can cause problems.

What are the risks involved? Have any of you tied and successfully used a mod with the X1c patch?

I personally haven't had any issues stability-wise with using Panu's mods (actually the mods have enhanced my X1 experience). They're actually very easy to uninstall (in case an issue arises). It's understandable that Cakewalk won't "support" this as it's not part or their product.

Cakewalk seems to be tolerating/accepting these mods as they've let Panu's thread on mods to continue on the forum (otherwise it would've been CH material...lol). I believe Brandon has even put up a thread that we uninstall the mods before calling in tech support. If there were any X1 issues these mods caused, there would've been chaos in the X1 forum and Cakewalk would've made a statement on it......but, I see only positives with people using it. I have downloaded almost all the available mods and they work great!!

I have been using the X1 mods since panup first starting posting them. Currently using the Dark Side of SONAR with X1c with no issues whatsoever. I think that is great that we can customize X1 to suit our own individual tastes. When panup gets done with his current project we will be able to take X1 GUI customization to another level.

    Cheers,

    Billy Buck

I registered on Panus site before I posted here as I was so excited to see what he had done.

Panu if you read this a personal thanks from me for making these available to us. I had to make one last effort to make sure before I started to check the mods out..............Billy Buck and Mesh thanks for the response and I am relieved that you both gave the mods a clean bill of health!

I use or have used all mods myself in my recording studio DAW and they have never failed.
Mods have been loaded thousands of times and users have been either silent or happy. Silence means usually "everything OK" :-).

Loaded a few of them last night panup. I really like the mods. Thanks again!

I'm using Panu's Darkside and have experienced no problems.  I'm no programmer but my understanding is that his mod, a revised DLL file, only affects the visual aspects of the Sonar GUI.  (Someone school me on this if I am wrong....)

I am surprised that Cakewalk has not answered the large number of requests for the return to pre-X1 levels of color scheme customization.  X1 is a Digital AUDIO workstation and most of us are focused on producing an audio product.  But our primary interface for operating the software is through our eyes.

So, like the old saying goes, at least it has a great personality and is a great cook.

Yeah Zenwit......It does appear that the mods are purely cosmetic and cosmetic is good. I wonder if Panup has any functional improvements under the table lol. It might raise a few eyebrows if there were functional changes made. Probably considered an infringement of copyright and a legal issue. Panup Cakewalk was hiring programmers!

It's standard practice to remove any modifications prior to attempting to reproduce a problem. It does not necessarily mean that those modifications are suspect, only that when troubleshooting you always want to start with a minimal, standard configuration.

Back in the day when I was servicing big iron, we made customers remove all third-party hardware before we'd even look at a problem. If the problem could not be reproduced using only the memory, I/O, and drives that originally shipped with the system, we walked.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
