Home Studio going semi pro configuration

OK I have a home Studio were I Record my music. Now a lot of Groups want me to record them I have a Lexicon Omega and Cubase LE were I can record 4 tracks at once. I have try Sonar and I love the program I'm going to buy Sonar X1 for my new Studio but I need an Audio Interface that allows me to record at least 12 to 16 tracks at a time. I am Buying a new PC Quad core 64 bits (if possible) just for Recording with Sonar and I was thinking in buying a Tascam us-1800 for my audio interface but I have read the forum and Its appear to have problems with the drivers. So if anyone cant point me in the right direction of what Audio interface will be better for me. I will be more than happy for any help. And if you need to know my recordings are the most Caribbean music. so ill be recording a lot of percussion ( Conga, Bongo, Tambora, Guiro, )

Focusrite 24 dsp is good or you can go for the Saphire 40 which has more inputs and outputs and excellent pre's

I use and am very impressed with the Allen & Heath ZED-R16. Details HERE

If I had the spare ££s I'd have its bigger brother the GS-R24. Details HERE

The ZED-16 can be expanded to 24 ins via ADAT, and is firewire only. The drivers are excellent and in a studio really handy as it can be used independent of the DAW as well.

The pres are excellent, the 4 Band EQ gorgeous and routing is mind blowing. Record the EQ or just use it for monitoring and don't record it.Mix completly OTB if you want, send tracks out to the individual channels EQ and use processers on the inserts and then re-record the results back on to the same track as a new layer. I can't think of a routing that's not possible.

On top of all that if you've never used an external mixer you'll find that latency is a complete non issue. What is it again, I've forgotten?

    Well worth a look IMHO.........

This all depends on how much money you have to spend and what kind of recording you are doing.  There is much to be said for the A&H stuff for band recording which you are doing.

Another route is separate components.  Lynx is used in pro studios and is a great bang for buck - 16 i/o's over USB (and it supposedly works unlike their FW interface) for $3000.  SSL will give you 24 i/os for about the same.  Neither of those include preamps, so you will have to buy an analog board or outboard.

Cheaper and w/ more features is RMe - well respected.  I use the TC Konneck 48 which sounds as good and some other nice features (remote control, etc.).  I saw one onsale for $800 the other day at one of the online places.

The steinberg/yama interfaces are great buys.  There is a USB model that just came out.  I'd wait for reveiws comments on it, but for $700 it has 8x8 and 2x ADATs.  That would get you to 16 ins w/ preamps for less than a $1000.

And don't forget a nice front end or preamp to do overdubs and main tracks.  Budget as much as you can for that - it makes a big difference.  A thousand gets you a nice preamp and comp combo (ISA, Gap Pre plus comp).  I'd rather have that than spend everything on an interface only.

But there are many manufacturers of audio interfaces.
