Recording Drums using Mackie 1640i Firewire Mixer

I have just ordered Cakewalk X1 Producer and look forward to the long road of learning this wonderful hobby. I am planning on purchasing the 1640i Firewire Mixer and need to know what else I will need to get the 9 outputs from my drum mics to my DAW. Is it plain and simple of just running the FW cable into my computer? Or is there some device in between that I am unaware of?

Thanks!!

As long as the device drivers are properly installed you're good to go. It looks like a pretty sophisticated device. I highly recommend reading the manual and hi-lighting important info.

Yes, I just checked out the Mackie Website and downloaded the PDF file for the 1640i Manual. It really just plugs into the Firewire input of the computer. Now I just have to make sure my soundcard is up-to-snuff so to speak. This manual is free and has a few pages of how-to drawings/diagrams to help me and others on our feet.

You don't need to use any other audio device. The 1640i Firewire Mixer is all you need. It has 24-bit/96kHz in/out. Just connect your speakers and headphones to it. You may want to use another audio interface for windows audio playback but I suggest using only the 1640i Mixer, in ASIO mode, for your Sonar audio input/output.
