Now, here's how to Market an X1 Expansion
Make it look like a cool ship to be on-board to outsiders. Allows the fanbois to put their money where there mouth is and shower money on their beloved vendor and likewise the naysayers to screw them as much as they dare. Nobody can complain it ain't fair. Everybody gets to be part of it. What's more you can still sell add-on's / modules for full whack. Perfect. http://www.propellerheads.se/paywhatyouwant/

Bit of grass is greener thinking there. That comes after two solid months or more of bitter complaint about the upgrade prices, and applies only to owners of the reason / record duo package. Reason 6 offers very little that isn't already in the duo package, which is now discontinued, and people were up in arms about it. This isn't great marketing at all, this is Properllerheads pulling back from the brink of an absolute marketing howler. I hope it works out for them, and I think this is a good deal (ish, it only lasts a month), but anyone who's been paying attention knows it's been a debacle.

X1 Expanded offers very little that isn't already in the base package, and is now to be included X2 Producer, and people were up in arms about it. That could have a similar sounding ring to it after a couple more months here, no?

I hope it works out for them, and I think this is a good deal (ish, it only lasts a month), but anyone who's been paying attention knows it's been a debacle. Discerning customers like myself saw clearly Record was an interim way of developing an audio engine for Reason which is why I never made a move on it until it qualified me to a free upgrade to Version 6. You have to pay attention to what all of them are doing if you want bang for your buck, didn't you know that already? Of course there haven't been any debacles here in the last few years, kudos to Cakewalk for that.

What's this? Taking a cool headed look at a company's product range, and buying what's suitable for you, when it's suitable for you? Crazy talk. One must at least be very angry about it.

Board room, Roland Corp HQ CEO: Honorable comrades, I bring news from the Americas. Our dear friends at Cakewalk.... Vice Chairman: You mean, of course, "Cakewalk by Roland' honorable superior? CEO: Ah so, you are correct my right-hand man. Our dear friends at Cakewalk *cough* by Roland have sent us details of an incredible marketing idea discovered this very day on honorable user forums. A man they call Jon the Bouy has come up with brilliant concept, indeed no, a new paradigm which could revolutionize the way we roll out future versions of the SONAH. I want this brilliant visionary brought immediately to Japan. Vice Chairman: I will make arrangements sir. I will of course send him first class tickets to Tokyo immediately. CEO: No you fool. Not Tokyo, Fukushima. Vice Chairman: Fukushima? CEO: Make it so. Vice Chairman: Still watching re-runs of Star Trek Honorable Next Generation I see. Surely that's a bit old-hat? CEO: I love it, it's my honorable guilty pleasure..... and don't call me Shirley.

Nice idea on paper, but in these hard times, you can expect that only a few individuals will pay anywhere near what the company would have asked for... Propellerheads will end up posting a loss for the next two fiscal quarters, a few (vital) employees will be "transitioned out" to compensate, and therein will begin the company's downward spiral. Inevitably we can look forward to a huge expansion of their iApps department...

Rejoice, you are currently in a buyers market. Ask and ye shall get. They haven't gone mad it only applies to current duo owners, and I already was in line for the free grace period update. It just means I can now give them money if I want to. For older duo owners this represents an update similar in the amount of actual content similar to the current Cakewalk offering, you just have the option to pay what you like for it. To an onlooker it probably looks cooler than it actually is, but isn't that what marketing is about? They even call their dongle an 'ignition key'...

I like the look of reason 6 but unless I've missed it I still don't see any sign of 64bit rewire and what's the betting that like all previous versions it still doesn't open at full screen? I really hate that they've ignored that for so long. Will read the full garb later but am rushing out the door. Steve

From past experiences with these types of promos, I'd wager that over 50% of the users will pay $5 or less. As has been mentioned very few users will pay anywhere near what a normal upgrade would expect to cost. Personally, I'll pay about $20 for the upgrade. Mainly because I've only had the Reason/Record Duo for a few months (I purchased used at a irresistible price) and Reason 6 was announced just a couple of weeks later. Also, I think the Duo concept was just a stopgap until Propellerheads could get a single product out and the users that put up with it are now being rewarded in a way. -e.B

record was a gamble..that failed, if it had sold better, they wouldn't have ripped the guts out of it and chucked it into reason simple as that. Or offered a nice deal when I upgraded reason 4 to 5.. As much as NI dropped Kore 2 very quickly and not won any fans for it. as for what e.blue said, loads will pay the bare minimum, why ? because they might as well have not put a "suggested features" on their forum , simply because they don't listen and instead of supporting products (the vast majority I own and see development near as stop) better just try to flog us new stuff. there is / was a bug in R5 and they totally ignored it.. big enough to be a prob (it didn't deal with older NN19 patches properly). Reason is a niche market.. so comparing it to anything else is a bit of an ask, with the main thing being no vst support. From what I've PERSONALLY experienced, they were happy to be all pally to new customers, yet forgot those who had bought their products already. A demo I went to reinforced that view, where new customers got offered a great deal on something.. and previous users (like myself) got offered no "deal" with expansion in x1.. remember some of it includes licensed from softube.. so they'd have to pay a certain amount per unit to them etc. so it's not so cut / dried as if it was SOLELY native code. but it's not something to compare... compare sonar against it's RIVALS sure.. but as much as reason is a music making program, I can't class it as a DAW even though I've used it since v1. geography comes into it also, although some of the bakers have very english sounding names.. they are at a disadvantage regarding EU tax etc. as much as mackie etc are also. I wonder of the % of people who do / don't use a DAW with VST support with reason. As much as like reason, there are too many FX / instruments outside of it I wouldn't want to give up. no doubt there will be a "reason 6.5" soon after to recoup some money, they aren't a charity. The biggest cost for them material wise is probably the dongle.. and well if we all have that from record.

It makes me wonder how much some of the Cakewalk 'loyalists' that are currently saying 'Kewl, count me in' would actually pay for Expanded given this choice.
