times they are a'changing

In my neck of the woods (los Angeles) the reality of keeping a multi-room facility economically feasable is becoming almost nil.

One major studio in Hollywood is offering their 'c' room for $35 per hour. A Neve console, tons of vintage gear and engineer included You have to purchase ten hour blocks, off hours, third engineer etc. but still, this is a rate that most budget studios can't offer.

Recently I was invited to a session where a 50 piece orchestra was being recorded. The musicians were in Prague but visable on a large monitor. The cost (for the orchestra) was somewhere in the $3000 range; A fraction of local union costs. The orchestra, by the way, sounded fantastic.

I really love this new technology; I love the fact that I can record a sax player or singer while being thousands of miles away;

I love garage band, band in a box, sample libraries like Hollywood Strings and Hollywood Brass. I love the fact that anyone can post their music on the web.

but at the same time I really hate it.

Between the internet and affordable software on inexpensive computers.... yeah, a lot has changed in the music business.  And I'm sure as technology improves, more will change in the future.

Many of the studio's that are borderline "in the black" will have a hard time staying that way.  Just recently a small studio opening in a local town.... I had to wonder how long they will be open here. They spent quite a bit of money on remodeling the rented building and gear for the studio.... so they are starting "in the red"....and pretty much unknown..... ouch.

On the flip side, all the advances have allowed musicians and writers tools to craft music and songs that just 10 years ago would have seemed impossible. This has allowed those same writers to get their music to the masses that would never have happened in the past. All from the spare room in your house.

I like the digital recording abilities and what it has to offer to many also.

Personally it is for my fun and enjoyment and not to provide support for myself and family, it has few negatives with me. Others can deal with the marketing.

At the end of the day it's all about me being able to play
my guitar- which is something I don't need any of this digital world for.....strings for my
    guitar are really more important...seriously.

So if the digital world disappeared tomorrow I hope there would still be strings for my guitars. ( and digital calipers...I like them a lot too :)
I still play for the same reason I started- the love of playing guitar-not all the things that
come after that.....so times haven't changed that much for me.

come to think of it.... mine need changing now.

Since I don't play live, it's not a high priority now like it used to be.

Unless I'm recording the guitar... then, bright sounding strings are a plus.
