I finally purchased a.....
Good morning luminaries.... I have finally purchased someting I've never used before.....a CAPO. Had two back in the late 70's but never used them and don't know where the ended up. I just got to thinking it may inspire some musical creativity for the two songs I've just finished lyrically. Any comments about usage or other experiences feel free to enlighten me? Happy Friday all....

I like to play acoustic in D or G so I use a capo a lot to change the key. One other thing I like to do too ... I'll double track an acoustic sometimes. I'll play in one key without the capo. Then place the capo on the 5th fret and play in the same key, just fretted differently of course. Gives a nice effect especially when hard panned, IMO of course. ;)

I use them fairly often. My tip: Before putting on the capo, finger a bar chord on the fret above where you're setting the capo (eg. if i'm setting it at the 2nd fret, i'll play a full Gmajor bar chord on the 3rd fret). Make sure that all 6 strings ring in tune, THEN carefully clamp the capo on with your picking/fingering hand. Once the capo is set, remove your fret hand. That should keep the pressure even when you're setting the capo, and keep your strings in tune.

Cool....great tips Bub/Slugbaby. Although I'm knowledgeable in music theory (2 years college) this capo thing is still dark territory for me. I'm opening the pack as we speak. 18 buckaroos for the da1m thing! Thanks everyone....

Hey Bapu.... Ha...capos on the pasta would be an expensive meal at the 18 bucks a pop unless you're trying to impress a babe on your first date and you get return on the investment. Time for more coffee....

Capos tend to get stuck in subway doors. Nothing makes you look less "Super" than being dragged backwards in your Hero undershreddies while being strangled by your capo. It's really hard to exude confidence and respect after that.

I hope the manual is not more than 18 buckaroos.

If you want to have more fun, you can get a partial capo like Shubb makes that only capo 3 or 5 strings.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

drewfx1 If you want to have more fun, you can get a partial capo like Shubb makes that only capo 3 or 5 strings. Actually, that gives me a good idea for one of the songs i'm working on. There are occasional Gmajor chords on off notes. If I get 2 regular capos, cut the D/G strings out of it, and set it on the 2nd fret, cut the A/D/G strings out of the other capo and put it on the 3rd, I'd have an "open G" when I didn't fret anything, but standard tuning for everything above the 3rd fret. That might work, but that's 2 wasted capos if I'm wrong...

drwfx1..... 'More fun'....sheesh.....I may have to recruit neurons that don't exist to go that route. I feel their is some transposing knowledge I need to grasp with the capo before I get too cocky in using a 'shubb' which I've never heard of. Learneth, learneth for me. Thank you...

I never really had a use for the capo until I got into open tunings. Some, like open E put a lot of tension on the guitar. My old hummingbird is from the early 70's and this much tension made me nervous. A guitar slinger I know said to tune to D and use a capo. Brilliant, and it never even crossed my mind. Keef made his living using one and if it's good enough for keef, well...

ampfixer.... Well....I've never used alternative tunings (I should get out more) but have threatened to many times. I heard them as previous band members used them on occasion and I liked the 'tension' alternative you refer to. As I say, I think I have some learning to do with this new approach to creativity. Hmmm....you mean 'keef' of the Richards clan?...just a shot from the hip.
