You guys are killing me with these guitar computers. It's all good until there's a static discharge and then they'll be tears.

You see, that's why I couldn't use one; I'd be worried that one of the hippy girls might cause a dangerous build up and discharge while they were dancing.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I've had a lot of modelers (and used to do some testing for Line 6), but after thinning the herd tremendously, what I kept was three pre-amps (a Rocktron Rock Master loaded with NOS Mullards, a VHT Valvulator GP3 and a Mesa Boogie Rectifier Recording Pre) and one power amp (a VHT 2/50/2). All nice individually, but there's some great dual-amping posibilities there as well. That said, the Kemper isn't a "modeler" perse, it's a profiler so you can start with someone's nice amp, then go beyond what the original amp was capable of. You can also profile any amp so you aren't limited to just what the manufacturer chose to model. With the library of user-provided profiles getting larger, this versatile (albeit fugly) unit might be able to justify the rather high price tag.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

I'm assuming the Kemper is fed the Amp-microphone signature via USB from your DAW. Really nice but my room sounds like Sh+t so I go digital to avoid it. I remember when I wanted to play loud in wide open natural space and get that sound but I'd have to drag the whole DAW out there with me to use the Kemper. I think it will have a limited High End appeal. If you're going to go live somewhere with the modeled sound through a PA, the problems are not much different. If your going to different studios with comparable acoustic control, it's a smaller package to carry. I think it's a great peice of work but where am I going to use it?

Spacey, if by chance you can hang in there a bit....we have something like that coming out for Acme Bar Gig. We've been testing it over the last few months with great success. And, I'd be willing to bet it will be WAY less money than the Kemper and be small enough to install on your lap top. :) As soon as I can release more info on it as well as a test plug, I'll let you know. jbow: I had a client come in here with the Ax Fx rack a few weeks ago. In my opinion, it's the best modelor I've ever heard and though it may be pricey, it's worth every penny. To my knowledge though, it wasn't able to cop an amp or your sound on the spot. That's the cool thing about the Kemper and the thing we're working on at ABG. With our plug, you can literally cop the exact tone/sound of the amp you're plugged into and it even cops your pedals you use. So you have the choice of the amp as it is, or the sound YOU come up with for a particular amp with pedals included. So say for example, you have an old Plexi Marshall that you run a few pedals through that allows it to get a certain sound...but you also like the amp with nothing on it....you can have both and it saves it to a file where you can call it up at any time. This will also allow you to go into a music store with your laptop, and play through an amp and send it right to your lappy to grab the sound. If you went to Sam Ash or Guitar Center, you could come home with all your favorite amps in one day. :) I don't know when this thing will be ready on our end, but I was told a beta would be ready to go for the public soon. It's been sort of a secret project we've been working on that hasn't been discussed much. You'll also be able to save sounds and add pictures to them. When looking at the file it saves, it will look like a .jpg. You send this file to your friends and it literally looks like the picture you chose for it...they grab it, drag and drop it into our software and bang...they have the amp you created. For example, if I went through the amp creation process and saved an amp or a specific tone from my 2101 tube pre amp and added this picture to the save...and you took this picture: and dragged and dropped it into our loader, you'd have the exact amp I modeled. The above amp is the actual amp we use in our ABG stuff that I helped to create, but I'm saying...any picture I add to an amp that is created via convolution, will save to a .jpg and be able to be shared that way. It's really going to be super cool when we get all this stuff together and release it. I'll keep you guys posted on it if you're interested. -Danny

If you just plug a Mic into the Kemper and model any situation, it would be much more user friendly.

Danny that's great! Man I'm very excited about your project. I'll definately be trying it on and wish you great success with it. I know most of us guitarist love pushing air but I think this digital stuff is fun....even when I feel I've wasted money like with GR3...I still have a fun time messin' with it and enjoy seeing it grow.

I cannot stress how good the Motherload does as a real speaker em. The Mesa Transatlantic is pretty versatile too. 5 sep tone stacks AC-30-ish AC-30-ish with top boost Tweed Bassman High Gain 1 High Gain 2 And it is switchable from 5-10-15 watts so you can push the tar out of it if you want. The amp sims pale by comparison.
Some people call me Maurice SPLAT Pro lifetime, ADK 6 core 3.6Ghz with 32 GB RAM, SSD 1TB system drive, 3 3TB regular drives for samples, recordings and misc. Behringer X Touch, UAD Apollo Quad. 2 UAD2 Quads PCI (i think - inside the box whatever that is), Console 1. More guitars (40??) and synths (hard and soft) than talent. Zendrum!!!
