Connecting virtual synths and midi properly
Ok. I will try to be short and sweet. I have made so many mistakes that I get discouraged with digital recording. Here goes. I want to know how is a midi track's settings supposed to look. Say for example, I have a midi controller, (X), and I want to insert a virtual synth to a project (Dimension Pro). Can somebody tell me what the midi track information is supposed to look like? I = Omni, O = Dimension Pro, and Midi Channel is supposed to be 1. Correct? And if I want to add another Dimension Pro, does it make a difference if I keep the Midi Channel at 1 or do I set the Channel to 2? Answering these questions would make a big difference to me. I think if someone can answer these questions satisfactorily, then I can be 3 times more efficient than I am now. It would be a great help to me. I hope whomever reads this understands what I am trying to accomplish. Thank you. "It's hard for this baby boomer to switch from old school to the 21st Century!"

If you want the DP instances to act independantly, they all need a midi channel of their own. Otherwise all the music coming through midi channel 1 is played by all instances using that channel. Otherwise your I/O's are correct. IIRC the tutorial on using sof synths (#4 ??) should cover this fully.

Actually kalle, I don't think that's entirely correct. I routinely insert more than one instance of synths like Dim Pro, each one is set to Midi Channel #1, but they each respond correctly to whatever patch is loaded. Obviously, it would be different if you want each instance to respond to external input from a keyboard. Then you'd have to change Midi channel for whatever instance you want to drive, but even if they were all set to channel 1, enabling input echon on the relevant track in Sonar would negate the need for separate channels

You're absolutely right. I got mixed with the channels of multi-out synths. My bad.

Can somebody tell me what the midi track information is supposed to look like? it really doesn't matter. just insert the synth and play. you shouldn't even have to look at the midi channel config. (use the audio channel) That said, Dim pro has a multitimbrel mode where you can use (i think) 4 voices independant of each other on there own midi tracks. In that case, you neeed to set each to it's own midi channel.

Thanks Kalle for getting this post going. And Bristol, thank you for taking it further. So now I think it's getting a little clearer. I mean I have completed songs and I have been doing this for about 6 years off and on (baby boomer life), but I want to know exactly what I'm doing so that when I make a mistake, I can know how to tackle the problem. Sonar 8.5.3 is wonderful when my sessions go smooth, but when the hiccups happen, they become problematic for me. I ramble. Okay, so when I insert more than one synth, it doesn't matter that the midi channel is the same. As long as my midi controller is set to input, and the output is my audio output device, and the first instance of DPro is set to DPro 1 and the second instance is set to DPro 2. I will go to the lab and create a song now.....Details at 10.

clasonar37, You can have multiple instances of a virtual instrument, and each one is like a separate MIDI input with its own 16 channel (not all virtual instruments respond to all 16 channels). Meanwhile, on each MIDI track, just make sure to choose which virtual instrument (in the Out field) you want that MIDI track to drive. I hope that answers your question.

Thanks Bbent for your response. I think I understand your answer. I did try more than one instance of DPro and it seemed to be fine. Again thank you and everyone else on this post. I really appreciate this.
