I Will Return ... Tribute to ELO by That Heavenly Choir
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=9455871 2-3 minutes (... just a feeble sketch-tribute to the old ELO ship in a distant melancholy harbor) All comments +/- appreciated.

I think it's got more of a Moby sound than ELO, with all the cut-up vocal segments, but I get where you're coming from, the opening chords are pure Jeff Lynne. Bass is coming through nicely. I think those 'telephone' sounding vocals need to come up to where they can be understood. The main vocal 'I will return' parts need some attention Philip, they're badly off-key. Overall an interesting excursion!

Interesting take on an ELO sound. I'm assuming the similarity to the end of the track Shangri-La from A New World Record is deliberate? With some mixing and work this sketch could end up a really good tribute. Cheers, Terry.

Not sure what to say about this Philip. Not knowing ELO, i take it the riff is one of theirs? good percussion, vocalisations, mix...but lacking that essential Philip spark of mad genius, in that this is just a fragment, a whim, a petit-boûche, to tease the listener. Still a cut above most of the stuff on here.

Phil, I'm an avid fan of ELO's music and listen to their songs almost daily. Shangri-La is one of my all time favourites tracks of theirs. Your tribute to them is wonderful. Loved the intro, and the choir throughout was sublime, as was the whole composition. The vocals were fine in parts, but if i'm honest, i did not favour your singing of the high notes. The singing at the lower spectrum was better. The song also cuts off suddenly at the end. All in all a superb track. I listened three times whilst writing. And on the third time, i did not mind the vocals at all. Bizarre.

Thanks Mark, Mark, Purple_R, and James. I was hoping our 2 Marks would give this a whirl and am shocked that one does not know the Beatle's emulation of ELO. I'll recheck the main vocal (melodyne has played tricks on me in prior versions -- ha ha) OTOH: Jeff Lynne seemed off key to my ears, when he groaned the Shangri-la outro ... of course I may be off in my portrait of this segment ... and will check things, for a re-take. As far as making a 'really good' tribute of ELO, that would be impossible for me: Like doing a painterly study of a painterly painting, I could never do justice to the genius master/producer (ELO/Lynne/Bev) without Bev's or Jeff's direct help/crits. Also, ELO is much more complex (IMHO) than the Beatles; to this day I've never heard a definitive ELO tribute for me to compare too. So remember artists/producers: this is just a portrait of a bite of ELO, a feeble tribute/homage to the world's 4th most accomplished producer (Washington Times: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Lynne). I actually expected negative crits on the lush plate verb -- ha ha! Though I prefer Mark and Mark for their current paradigms and approach to music; ELO is a complex excursion that mesmerizes as well.

Awesome production! So many different parts put together that melt in one cohesive sound. Pitty that it only have one part to the song and one sentence to the lyrics, as you said, it is only a sketch.

I'll tell you once more before I walk out the door, I like ELO! It does sound ELSesque? Is this a tribute to ELO or a tribute to Douglas MacArthur?

Big ELO fan but realy didn't feel them in this. Very interesting arrangement choices, Philip. But why not use East West and do a real string arpeggio? That woulda worked a little better, methinks. The rhythm stuff with the tambs were great and groovy.

It's like ELO meets Enigma. Very nice work. The section from .20 to 41 or so, it happens again but shorter later, is weird. The bass and bass drum sound bad to me. Is there a delay there or something. After that, they sound great, maybe a bit to loud but really tight. An interesting take. Well done!

Hi Philip, I think you would have made ELO jealous with this arrangement and mix. The radio voice in the background was all that rang of ELO to me. This was superb and extremely creative. The track/percussive build up is so sweet. Very inspired production.

Vicente: Yeh, just a sketch of a bite of ELO. Yeh, those 3 words "I will return" have always haunted me during teen events. Bandontherun: I always hated "Bruce"; its like ELO had 2 sides, the melancholy and the party animal ... I loved the former. Sorry I don't understand the reference to the Colonel. Thanks for your kind listen. Factory Yoyo: James; Thanks for your swift ingenius crit (and your last encouragement on our Army song). I used EW and didn't think of trying a real string arpeggio ... that would have been much better than the MIDI blandness I looped up with the violas. Thanks so much for your spot on deep thoughts. Guitarpima: You're right and extremely observant; I began with another drum kit (Superior Drummer ... hoping to get the ELO march going ... but with stronger kick bass) then broke into using a beatscape kit for the pop rhythm. I always have a difficult time getting a good kick with Superior Drummer and am always open to suggestions. Anyway, thank you for your spot-on crit, my friend. Clean: Thanks for your listen and enjoyment. I realize its 'off the beaten track' a bit. Rick: Thanks for flattering my fun here, bro. ELO may have had a 'telephone line' issue, iirc (lol) ... about the time this song was around.

I think Superior Drummer has a transient shaper in it's effects package. You could try that to shorten the BDs decay.
