Recording Soft Synths

I am looking to lay down a track using the CAKEWALK 6 SI String Synth. The song is so slow and simple I'd like to just play the instrument with the computer mouse...however, when I arm the track for recording, I lose the signal to the track. Does this instrument require a midi controller?
I have assigned in and out as previously on another song, so not sure why it would be a problem.

If you don't use a keyboard controller you can use the step sequencer to enter MIDI data to cotrol the synth or entre data into the piano roll (PRV) or staff.

In that sense you don't arm a track for recording

to enter notes using your qwerty keyboard you need a bit of software like Bome's MIDI keyboard. here's the link http://www.bome.com/products/mousekeyboard

it's not necessary to record the output of the synth.  record the MIDI in PRV if you're using your mouse and it will play the output from the synth in your project's stereo field that you've assigned to that MIDI track.

I suggest you work thru the tutorials on MIDI in X1's help files.  they're quite good for helping you to understand how MIDI and softsytnhs work, especially tutorials 4&5.
