XP vs other Windows versions

I've had an easy time using Sonar 6 and 7 with all versions of XP.   In particular, audio recording seemed pretty stable on 32-bit machines.

Now I'm on an ACER 64-bit with Windows 7 and having a significant number of crashes, ie blue screen of death during audio recording.

Windows 7 is also a major pain regarding driver compatibility issues for my AKAI S5000 and other legacy equipment which I rely on.

Anyone else feel XP is just more stable, for Sonar and audio in general ?   I want to write music not spend my life in the Control Panel.

    Hey, sorry to hear that you're having issues with Sonar and Windows 7. Windows 7 64-bit is a much more stable platform and works better with Sonar X1 than Windows XP did with Sonar 6 or 7. Are you running Sonar 6 and 7 on Windows 7 64-bit? The mention of driver issues with your AKAI S5000 as well as other issues you might have with your Acer computer could be the root cause of instability.

    What were the specific issues with Sonar 6 & 7 running on XP?  I only ask because I have been running Sonar 6 & 7 on XP for 4½ years and on 3 different computers without any apparent problems.

    Stick with what works for you.  You could have a fine sonar XP box with your current legacy recording set up and then have some cheap windows 7 current laptop to enjoy the web.  Don't believe the upgrade hype!

    I built a new DAW (custom self build) just about a year ago. 

    I opted to buy a MS version of XP. I am running Music Creator 4 & 5, as well as X1 with out problems. 

    Crashes are usually driver conflicts. 

    I have heard of a bunch here that are using W7/64 and loving it. I also know many who are sticking to XP/32 with no plans to upgrade any time soon...... me included. 

    If it works..... and it's not broken.... why try to fix it?

    I don't think Sonar became fully compatible with a 64 bit OS till 8.0. I just seem to remember seeing that somewhere.

    What does the Akai have to do with anything? I must be missing something. Isn't it just an 'audio out' piece of hardware?
    Not sure, but, maybe you could just put XP on the Acer. I wanted Win7 64 for more ram.

    Win 7 is a very stable OS (better than XP) but you do need Vista/Win 7 drivers for most devices, especially audio since some audio functions are handled differently in Vista/Win 7.   A few device drivers will work if installed in a compatibility mode but most need Vista/Win 7 specific drivers.

    With the end of "life" (Microsoft support) coming up for XP, if your hardware/drivers can support Win 7 it is a better alternative.

    This was meant as a genuine question, not rhetorical.  I am intending to stick with Sonar 7 and Windows XP for a while longer, so I am interested in knowing about any potential problems that may still occur.
