Yamaha DTXplorer midi connection

Hello,
 
I have a Yamaha DTXplorer electronic drum kit and want to record my drums through midi into Sonar, I have connected the drum kit with a midi cable to the midi input on my interface, m-audio fast track ultra 8r.   I get sound and it records, but the notes don't line up with the piano roll of the midi track.  When I hit the cymbals and the toms they are fine and place in the right spot in the piano roll, when I hit the snare it makes a noise toward the bottom of the list of drums, scratch, side hit etc.    When I hit the bass drum it makes no noise at all.
 
there is another post that seems to have a solution to the problem, but there are no responses to see if it worked for anyone else, it also looks a little complicated.   So I was hoping someone had another solution.    
 
I have plugged in keyboards through the midi input before and they have worked perfectly.
 
Don't know if you need any more information or not?

    most drum heads are not GM mapped and I've never understood that myself.  look at your DTXplorer's manual and see what mappings they have listed for the note assignments.  if it's not GM (which I suspect it's not) then you'll need to get or make a drum map.

    what are you using for output for your MIDI track?  that will also determine what notes go where for the drum map.  a lot of the softsynths are not GM mapped either.

    The output is "master" the input is M-audio midi, omni.

    I have always been confused what to select in these columns.     I usually write my own drums in PRV, I select channel 10 and I use drum core a softsynth as an effect on the track.   sometimes I make the input on the midi track "drum core", any of these options seem to work.    

    The answer the other post had was along the same lines, making a new drum map that would fit my kit.   I thought there would be software in sonar to do this though, not something I would have to buy or trial?

    Whats GM?  

    I have read my user manual for the drum kit and it says nothing about midi other than you should connect it and it will work, I have been to their FAQ's on the site and support forums and there is no specific answer to the questions.   I have done the same with Sonar and again there is no real answer or mention that this may occur.    the problem is most of the advice is directed at a keyboard not a drum kit.

    GM= General MIDI.
     
    Here's what you do if you can't find or don't want to write a custom instrument definition:
    Find which listed drum makes the sound of the drum in your synth that you want to hear.
    Then click the drum name where the MIDI data was written when you recorded the drums. That should select all of the notes of that drum.
    Drag the notes to the place that makes the sound you want to hear. All of them should drag by grabbing one with the cursor.
     
    The drum kit transmits on a different note than the drum names in the list. For instance, the bass drum in GM might be C3, but your bass drum uses maybe Ab3. Those are examples; I don't know what notes they transmit on, but your drum set documentaion probably has a list of what notes the different drums use.

    roland does it too.  I don't know why.

    but also, I think you can't use drum maps with an instrument track, I think you need separate MIDI/OUTPUT tracks.  if your MIDI output is set to MASTER then you're currently using a SIMPLE INSTRUMENT TRACK.

    Good idea I didn't think of that, because I only have to move the bass drum and snare its not that bad.   I just had a go and everything went fine after moving the bass drum and snare on the prv.

    I used a new midi track this time, made the output drumcore and the input the m-audio midi
