"Beverly Drive" -My 1st Song Done Completely in X1

Over the summer, I bought a new computer and upgraded to X1. I am still figuring out some of changes with X1. Here's the 1st song I did completely in X1. It's an acoustic ballad called "Beverly Drive." I did the main guitar and vocals live and added some other elements - more acoustic guitar, melodica and background vocals. Any comments or questions are encouraged. http://marwoodwilliams.ba...om/track/beverly-drive

Well, to tell you the truth, itsnot going to win you any prizes, but it is a good start to something better. Your not putting your heart and soul into the singing and so thats how it sounds. I think it needs to be a bite more lively and heart felt. Put some other instrumentation into it and bring this song to life. You have some good lyrics to work with, now everything needs to be fine tuned and you have to get it your very best heart and soul, as if you mean it, both instrumentally and vocally. Keep at it and you will honestly hear and feel the difference.

Just my opinion and honesty as a listener/musician.

    Blessings, John

I think the song has a lot of potential. I have to agree with the above. It may sound better more up tempo.

I hope you work it out.

Thanks for the comments! The song is a folky ballad - some of the aspects that people have mentioned were deliberate, including my "stripped down" approach in the recording and arrangement. I plan on revisiting the song in the not too distant future.

The harmonica is too loud.  The instrumentation needs some space.  Widen the guitar using a delay.  I would consider adding a soft finger picked bass and some drums played with brushes.  Instead of an harmonica, maybe consider a slide guitar?

I agree with the comments above.  You have great potential in this song.  First of all, I believe that your voice is perfect for this song.  It has a "smokey" quality that adds to the slightly melancholy feel of this song.  I am sure that you don't want to overstate the vocals but a little more inflection would add a bit more emotion to the song.  The lyrics are great!  Your playing is good and you don't want to overload the song with instrumentation but perhaps a bit more on the rhythm might help carry the song along more.
    Nice one!

Thanks for the additional comments! Thanks, Freddy J. and Vincente. Your comments give me a lot to contemplate. By the way -it's a melodica (I wish I could play harmonica that well) - but I agree with you about the level. I will play around with some slide guitar, lap steel ideas.

First - this is better than I can do so take my comments with that in mind.
It sounds like your objective is to record this as it is played/written with just the vocals and the guitar and the harmonica (melodica).  I think it would work for a live performance, but as a recording it needs something in the lower frequencies to fill out the sound.  A simple bass line, possibly a little Hammond Organ or a bass pad.   To me, the whole mix sounds too dry and needs some reverb/delay across the board.  I like how the backup vocals come in later in the song, but I think they are a bit to much for a good background sound.  Again, I think some reverb would help with this but turning them down might still be needed.  The Melodica is piercingly too loud and dry.  I like the song and I like the performance, I just think it needs a little more production.

I agree with the other comments that were offered. I will also add that I feel that the mix sounded a bit brittle. Lacking in any lower end tones.
    Keep at it.
