Sonar 8 Producer edition, no sound.

Hi,

I'm trying to get sound output to my speakers and nothing seems to work. I even tried downloading "ASIO4ALL" as per some thread I found, nothing seems to work. Can someone give me step-by-step instructions on how to make it work? I am new to sound recording software and very frustrated.

Here is all the information I think could be relevant:

Windows Vista
Sound Card: SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
Built-in speakers on Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop.

Here's all the audio options I have:

After this I'm going to try and figure out how to record data from my Axiom 25 keyboard. Sonar seems to be detecting input but I can't figure out how to record it, heh...

"SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" - This sounds like onboard sound on your laptop which generally is no good for the job.
Have you bought a proper soundcard for the job and have you installed the correct drivers for it (latest from the internet).
Otherwise you may be out of luck until you spend some $$$.
    Thanks

BTW this is the Sonar X1 forums, not Sonar 8.
(Don't worry we all do this first time around).

    Cheers.

First try changing stream 16 bit data to pcm right justifed, the other thing to check is in global settings, look at audio data and make sure that is set to 24 bit apart from that you will have to buy an audio interface, if you haven't got much money there are a few for around a hundred dollars.

With onboard sound, you are going to have to use ASIO4ALL for any useful performance.

With ASIO4ALL installed, open SONAR and go to File>New and choose the Normal Template, name the project and open it.

Go to the Preferences window (usually by pressing "p" on the keyboard or by going to Edit>Preferences.) Under Audio, select Playback and Recording, across from Driver Mode, select ASIO from the dropdown menu. Under Audio, select Devices. Under Inputs Drivers/Outputs Drivers you should see the ASIO4All available inputs and outputs. Put a check make in the input and output choices for the ASIO4All driver choices. Select Apply and OK.

Select an audio track in SONAR by left-clicking on a track number. In the Inspector, go to the track's In/Out area at the bottom of the Inspector. For the track's input, select the ASIO4ALL input you have your microphone connected to. For the track's output, select the ASIO4ALL output you have your speakers connected to.

That's a very basic setup, but that should get you started.

For more help, read the Tutorials in the SONAR Help file (accessed by going to Help> Getting Started) in SONAR.

But unless you get you an audio interface that is made for using with DAW software such as SONAR, your music production experience might not be very impressive.

    Hope that Helps.

Hmm, will my sound card really not be ale to handle simple composition using a MIDI Keyboard? I mean, surely my sound card can handle very basic things in this program? I obviously don't know what I'm talking about though. Why does Sonar 8 require so much from my sound card just to output to my speakers?

Sorry about that. Is there a way to get it moved to the correct forum? Will I be ale to find it once it's there?

I'm sorry, I'm a complete newbie and don't know how to do these things. Mind giving me step-by-step instructions and/or explaining what the differences mean in data streams and audio data etc? Obviously making Sonar work is my first priority here.

Man, are you giving me step-by-step instructions for a different program (sonar X1)? Because I have no edit>preferences. I changed the driver mode to ASIO under the Options>Audio/Advanced menu and then in the driver tab the ASIO4ALL options were there and checked off. Then I imported an mp3 to a track and selected ASIO4ALL as the output in what I assumed was this inspector you were talking about, but still no sound!

Here's a screenshot of what I have (no sound coming from my speakers still):

Cowpig you should really try a different name, on the very first screen shot you have audio options, if you look down that screen you will find stream 16 bit 32bit left justifed change that to right, I'm not saying this will work but it might.

    Peace Ben

Sorry. This is the X1 forum.

Try dragging that mp3 audio up to track 1, and select the ASIO4All output as track 1's output.

Make sure your speakers are connected to the correct output on your computer.

cowpig, take another screenshot but this time expand your tracks and busses vertically so that the routing is visible.

I have a laptop with a SigmaTel interface, and the only way I could get sound out of it was to either use the MME driver or ASIO4All. It really is just about the crappiest audio interface on the planet and quite unsuitable for serious audio work. However, it should do just fine for futzing about with some MIDI compositions.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I was going to say that the only way I've ever had MIDI working with an on board card was to use MME mode and the Microsoft MIDI. Never managed to get soft synth's under asio4all. If you don't mind the quality of the Microsoft wave synth you can at least make a start and learn the program while aspiring to purchase a proper audio/MIDI interface.

For now just select MME mode and choose the Mircrosoft MIDI as your output.
Also without a midi keyboard or a controller you won't  be able to input  MIDI in a musical way.

Yeah, we really can't see what output driver you have selected for the track's output. I'm sure there's more than one output driver available for the ASIO4All output selections. Make sure all of them are selected in the Audio Options Output Drivers section.

I can see there is an Audio signal in that track you imported the mp3 to, but that track looks like it might be an Instrument track, so I say:  Drag that mp3 audio up to track one and try all the ASIO4ALL outputs as the output of track one.

Also, it is important to make sure your speakers are connected to the correct connector on your computer. If you have an analog speaker system with a 1/8 inch male connector, the correct connector on the PC is usually a 1/8 inch green female connector.

    Hope that helps.
