Quick Dub

Before X1, I always worked with external recorders (either hard disk or tape), even when using a PC to sequence MIDI and run some VIs.  Now I am using X1 with a V-Studio 700.  I have some external MIDI synths as well as the VIs

Question: If I want to do a quick dub—that is, make a quick CD of a rough mix—what is the fastest way?

I assume I would need to take the output of the V-Studio interface and somehow capture it as a stereo WAV in the PC.

The goal is to make a quick cut for the singer(s) to work with and for my use to evaluate arrangements in different listening environments.  I really don't want to do all the recording, bouncing, freezing, etc. at this stage.

Thoughts on the easiest and fastest way to do this?

Thanks.

You can just do an export from the file menu.  From the export dialog box you can choose the things to include and what format to output.  All the syths and effects are renderd (if desired) when you export.

Thanks.  But wouldn't I have to record the external synths first?  I was hoping I could just somehow capture the audio output I hear in the monitors.

If it's just a quick cut for the singers, could you get away with not having the external synths being in the mix? Just use the Vsti's?

Otherwise I think your only option is if your soundcard provides a "record what you hear" option, and not all of them do.

Select all the tracks you want in the mix on the export. External synths must be recorded to the tracks with a soft synth or as audio.

Select export, choose the options and select WHAT YOU HEAR as your preset.

Choose the destination and click OK.  You'll have a file of what you hear when you do playback from the computer DAW.
