Another victim of the "Crackle"!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am out of ideas. Here are my specs: Win 7 x64, Intel i5 Quad Core 2.67Ghz, 4 GB Ram, M-Audio Delta 192 soundcard with Sonar X1c Producer.I have been reading post after post about crackle issues in Sonar X1c and I can't seem to get mine to go away. It seems to occur most frequently during playback of bass-heavy sounds. I brought up an instance of Beatscape and played "Triage-Bass" loop at my normal settings 192Khz, 24 Bit, 64-bit audio engine on and it is crackle city. I use ASIO Driver Mode and have increased Playback I/O buffer size and still it crackles. I lowered the sampling rate to 11.025K and no crackle...clear as a bell. I steadily increased sampling rate until 48K when the crackle started to come back. I think my computer is more than capable so I am looking at the Delta soundcard. Do I need a new soundcard? Thanks!

Are you using 64 bit Sonar? (I suggest you throw your full specs in your footer). Have you adjusted your speedstep/core parking settings yet? If not that's something to try as you have a quadcore PC (google for details). Also I'm sure you are on the latest drivers? Thanks Alex

Have you also tried adjusting the DMA buffer size in the M-Audio panel?

Thanks for the replies Alex and Lorney. I have added specs to my footer and am reading about speedstep /core parking right now. I have adjusted the DMA buffer size in the M-audio panel and still the crackle. I have the latest driver installed for the sound card and X1c for Sonar.

Here's a stupid question. Are you redlining your tracks or outputs?

You don't need to record at 24bit/192KHz. If you do, then you need top end hardware.

Turn off Speedstep, good move. Check all your drives and turn on Write cache Run MSconfig and make sure there aren't a bunch of preloaded items that you really don't need. Update your video drivers to the latest Update your bios to the latest version Update your M-Audio drivers to the latest. Turn off firewire if you are not using it. Make sure your computer is in performance mode, not power saving for a desktop. Turn off any service that is design to launch a process at a certain time/date including virus checkers, Adobe updates, Windows updates etc. If you have more than one controller i.e. midi keyboard, midi mixer etc, disable them all and see if the noise stops. This will lead you ti increase your midi buffers which can be an issue. Last resort, if you have multiple drives, move the SATA connectors around. Try to get C: drive as drive 0 in drive manager.

Have you checked for crackle using headphones as well as monitors? Do you need to record at 192KHz (genuine question)? High sampling rates can place quite a strain on hardware (and Windows).

I had a similar problem with my previous computer running an older version of Sonar. Turns out my sound card and my Ethernet card were sharing the same IRQ address. I suppose I could have tried moving the sound card to another slot in the hope it would have been assigned a different IRQ but instead I just disabled the Ethernet card when using Sonar and the crackling went away.

The fundamental problem won't be with Sonar itself. I had a M-Audio 192 and then a M-Audio Delta66 and suffered crackles from time to time with both of them. I assume you've been over to their forums and seen the plethora of posts about this? I finally ditched M-Audio interfaces and bought a Saffire 14 Pro and have never had a crackle since. If it's any help I posted some possible moves to address the crackle problem on my web site, although some of them have already been mentioned above: 'Crackles and Sizzle'. John

If you have a compressor on the bass track, slow down the attack rate and see if that helps.

Thanks to all for the replies. I will try to answer all questions now. "No" compressor or any other effects at all in the project. Just one bass loop in Beatscape. "No" redlining at all in either track or master. "Yes" it crackles in the headphones as well as the monitors "No" I don't need to run at 192K but it crackles at 96K and 88.1K as well. I would like to run at 96K. When the loop plays, the CPU meters barely flicker and CPU Usage is around 18%. I am going to start reading all of the suggested material. Thanks again for the replies.

brundlefly DPC Latency? http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml And what buffer size (in samples) are you trying to run? It automaticallyu defaults to 256 samples. I and running latency checker on a project that has many tracks and absolute max is 117us. Thanks for the link!
