Detailed envelope movement

Hi, please is there some way I can move envelopes in detailed steps? Often it is almost impossible to reach same gain, pan or other value. The steps between numbers are not equal. This is nightmare when I want to set for example panorama envelope to 53% on two clips. On the first envelope I can set 53, but on other it is 52 or 56 or something like that. It depends on track width. It can be more useful if there is some easy principe - right click+arrow up.

Yes, it has seemed like that would be an obvious improvement and it has been suggested since the envelopes were introduced many many years ago.

    Good idea.

    Yeah...

Insert the nodes where you want them... on the existing envelope....manually.

I normally insert an envelope, and it goes in as a straight line based on the volume fader's position when the envelope is inserted.

I insert my nodes manually by clicking on the envelope line. I never use the "record automation" in playback to pull the faders up and down. I like the surgical precision of manually inserting the nodes.  I will zoom in horizontal to get exact placement of the node.  4 nodes inserted make ONE volume event for me.  I click the center line between the nodes and drag it up or down.  Manually inserting nodes for volume on a track only takes a few minutes to do. It's also easier to go back and edit that to have to delete all the nodes created by moving the faders in "Write" mode.

If I need to be very precise on the level...and as you noticed, even a slow mouse drag skips numbers..... simply drag the bottom of the track down to make the track BIGGER on the screen.  Its a matter of scale. If the track with the envelope is tiny (vertically) the numbers will skip. If the track is large vertically you can get very precise positioning of the envelope numbers.

    Hope that helps

Did you know that you don't have to manually insert 4 nodes you can just alt-'wipe' a selection and then use 'add nodes at selection' and 4 nodes will be added.

As for incremental changes, I'm kinda guessing but, can't you hold down the shift key?

Even faster: Drag-select the time range in the lower half of the clip, move the mouse pointer to the upper quarter of the clip where it becomes the move cursor, and then click and drag up or down to insert four nodes and change the level for that segment at the same time.

Getting back to the OP's concern, unfortunately, Shift-drag does not give more precision with moving envelope nodes (I'm headed for the Feature Request page now).

In addition to maximizing the track height as Guitarhacker suggests, the other way to get precision is to right-click a node, select Properties and enter a value directly. Then the question becomes: can you hear the difference between 52% and 53% pan?

Personally, I use the value parameter entry when I want to be sure that a level setting is constant.

I don't like the idea of it sloping unintentionally.... probably more a mental housekeeping thing than a practical concern... but that's how I do it.

I'd like to be able to click on  aline segment and then nudge it up or down using the plus or minus key... sort of like using the level faders.

    best regards,
