Best way to lengthen a sustained vocal note by 0.2 seconds using Essential?
Hey everyone, I searched previous threads and tried some things like Fit to Time and copy and pasting but I can't quite get it right. When I copy some of the sustained note and paste I get a slight crackle. Any suggestions? Thanks Jeff

Snip it into a seperate clip. Hold down ctrl-shift and drag the right end of the clip. Then, highlight the clip and right mouse click into "bounce to clip". If that crackles, it the recording.

Could the crackle be caused by the region you paste not being crossfaded? The time stretch method bapu mentions should work OK. Before you bounce it to a clip it may sound glitchy or warbly because the time stretch algorithm for real time playback doesn't sound as good as the non-real time (bounce to clip) algorithm. A quick and dirty way to do it is to put a split point somewhere in the middle of the note, drag the 2nd half of the note .2 seconds to the right and then click on one of the edges of the gap and drag it to the other edge to fill the gap. You'll probably need to play around with the best place to put the split and the length of the crossfade you use. I've used this technique a lot. Works great on drums and bass too.

Thanks for the advice, bapu. The clip lengthening works fine and I tried it several times, but I still get a crackle most times, just at the split on the left. The Audio Zero Crossings is activated and I try to match up with her vibrato. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Jeff

Rick O Shay, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure about splitting the note and dragging it to fill the silence. Can you explain your technique for croossfeed in more detail? I am a newbie! Thanks, Jeff

Dowload this and have a look: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15293955/edit.zip I put together some screenshots and a quick explanation. Basically, you're lengthening the note by repeating a section. It's hit-and-miss on voice depending on the song and the style of the singer, but with a litle practice, you'll be surprised how well this technique can work. One thing to remember when editing is that you'll almost always need a crossfade at the edit points you create in order to avoid pops and clicks.

Rick O Shay, you are a Genius! I tried it again as you said with the cross fades and i t worked perfectly! I didn't think it would because of the vibrato, but it is perfect! Thanks Jeff

A fast cross fade should work but if not.... add a second track and overlay the 2 clips.... use envelopes to do a cross fade between the 2 tracks... track 1 has to be faded out before the click and track 2 fades in after the click. Done right, it should be pretty hard to hear the edit. It's really helpful to zoom in really close for this edit. Or...... Use Melodyne to stretch the note.

V-Vocal is the perfect tool for this. Isolate the clip, apply VV to it, go into the Time page (Press 'T' on the VV UI), drag out the end note. Simples.
