sonar 8.5 doesn't like emu 0404 usb midi

I don't understand; I was working fine with the midi from my emu 0404 usb unit (I know it's an old unit); I had to detach it yesterday and put the laptop away (windows xp - yes old); I reconnect today - and it's not reading midi anymore; I downloaded new drivers from emu but sonar is still not playing midi; it sees the 0404 for midi ins and outs - I see the parts playing; but there's no sound; I'm tearing my hair out; I guess I could reinstall the sonar 8.5, but why did this happen?  I feel like there's probably some simple switch or option I should be choosing that would solve this?  Anybody have any ideas?  Thank you.

Are you using a soft synth?
A Outboard MIDI sound source? ( via the 0404 )
Or the Mircosoft MIDI ( on board sound card) ?

Yes, I'm using the cakewalk vscs - I am using the 0404 midi - sonar sees it and has it assigned; I see sound visually playing the parts - but no sound - there is audio, just not the midi tracks; I reinstalled the sonar 8.5 (I already had earlier versions on here) - did no good; I don't understand; I use it like this all the time; it played midi parts this morning that I had already recorded (though I couldn't record new ones, at least the keyboard wouldn't sound the midi); but now nothing; it felt like there was a second of playback when I first opened the file, then nothing.  I switched over to the microsoft to see if that would work, no there either; like I say I see the parts playing, but no sound, and the midi assignments seem to be right; I also loaded the vsc again to see if a new soft synth would work, but no there either; I can't see any problems with muting of tracks - not sure what to do - thanks for any help.

the 0404 doesn't have sounds for MIDI to trigger.  it has nothing to do with MIDI "sounds" except that it's a soundcard and the sound will eventually come thru it's converters.

MIDI has to have a synth of some kind to be able to hear output from it triggering the sounds.  but what you're saying to me doesn't add up.  you say you're using the cakewalk vscs (which I'm assuming maybe this is the Edirol VSC?  that's the only thing I can think of that might be close), but then you also say you're using the 0404 MIDI and has it assigned.

if you have MIDI recorded on a track then you do not need a MIDI I/O port on the 0404 assigned to the MIDI track unless you want to use your keyboard as the output.

If you want to use a softsynth like the Edirol VSC (again - I'm not sure that's what you mean by "cakewalk vscs", so if that's not what you mean then you need to tell us EXACTLY what you're using), then you don't assign the output of the MIDI track to the 0404 MIDI output port.  you assign it to the EDIROL VSC output track.

so you're telling us 2 different things.  you can't be using the softsynth if your MIDI track is assigned to the 0404 MIDI port.  and you can't be using the 0404 MIDI port for output if you're using a softsynth for output.

I apologize for the confusion; yes, I was using the edirol vsc.  I only meant that I had been having trouble putting new data down as well as it not playing already recorded data.  It was assigned to output to the edirol vsc.  Everything was "normal", the way I've done it a million times.

I did a system restore, and it seems to have done the trick.  Maybe I downloaded something that screwed something up.  I don't know why this happens and wish I knew more about the intricacies of this so I could figure out when there's a problem.  I do want to ask you this - my sonar scans every time I open it, should it be doing that?  The other question is, if, as in this case, I "see" the signal, from a midi track, and I can also make a sound with my cursor on the vsc instrument (I went into the edirol and struck it with my cursor and it did produce sound) - where should I be looking for the problem?

Appreciate your help with this, and info is appreciated.  Let's hope it keeps working.
