Audio engine crashes and wont restart after recording one track

I am a returning customer of cakewalks who got suckered into parting with his cash on a 'loyal customer' bargain for sonar x1 producer.  Wow, am I regretting it.  So far the software is useless.

The machine I am running it on I am also running Ableton Live, Reaper, Renoise and Cubase on.  With my current audio interface and latency configuration (a Presonus Firestudio ) and running on my optimized Windows Vista system (yes, I havnt upgraded yet for a number of reasons), I am able to record, mix, and move audio at will. Sonar, it seems, doesnt like something.

Here is what I do:

1.  Start a new project
2.  Delete all tracks except one audio track
3.  Record some audio (fine so far)
4.  Add another track
5.  Arm it for recording...UH OH...WONT LET ME

At that point, the audio engine is locked.  It will not play back (though the clip preview still works), it will not let me arm a track.  The CPU and disk meters are pegged and it makes absolutely no sense at all.

Also, if I record the audio using one of the other DAWs and then fly the raw audio tracks in....everything works peachy.  This *only* happens when I record audio with Sonar.

Any suggestions?

well first of all, sorry you feel you've been suckered, but there are a lot of folks who have it working quite well.

2nd - this is not the X1 forum, it's the 8.5 and below forum.  there's a separate forum for X1.

3rd - I have X1, so I might be able to help you anyway and I'm not sure this is a problem specific to X1 anyway.  but I have questions for you

    Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit?
what driver mode are you using?  WDM or ASIO?
when you say "it won't let you" do you mean that if you click on the ARM button it just doesn't turn red or is there an error message or something else?  if something else, what?  please make sure you describe in detail what happens when you click the ARM button.
what do you have listed for your RECORDING and PLAYBACK DEVICES in PREFERENCES?  (hit "P" on the keyboard for the shortcut)
do you have the latest vista drivers from presonus (32 or 64 bit appropriate)?

sorry about posting the wrong forum.  I am new around here..

    Anyway, to answer the questions:

    Vista is 32 bit
    ASIO Drivers

On the second track, when I click record, it lets me arm it, but as soon as I press record and play at the top, i get a message that says 'drop out' and the audio engine shuts off.  I turn it back on, but nothing will work until I reboot the computer, and that project will have the issue now and forever.  It wont let me record into a project that has existing audio.

Ok, that's completely different than what I thought from your first post.

go to PREFERENCES and on the DRIVERS SETTINGS what is the INPUT latency in msec and samples?

if it's low, increase it by clickingon the ASIO button and increasing your hardware buffers.  usually 256 or 512 should work.
