This Message Seems Not to Make Any Sense!! (To me anyway)

Hi All!

When I open certain projects in X1 (they could be original X1 projects or projects started in 8.5.3) I get the following message:

"The following Tracks and Busses are currently assigned to silent Hardare Outputs. The Items listed below will be silent in your project until their outputs are reassigned to an appropriate hardware output".

In the dialogue box below this message, the names of the tracks are given.
For instance:

Vocal 1
Vocal 2

I open the project and check all the outputs, and guess what?
They're all assigned appropriately  (from what I can see, anyway)!
I play my project (without changing a darn thing), and every track plays perfectly!!

So what is this message? and how do I get it to go away?

Harpo

Check the outputs carefully. You may be hearing a send and not an out.

If you are using the sends rather than the outs deliberately for some reason you can silence the warning.

    By using the instruction

    WarnSilentBuses=0

In the Cakewalk.ini file which you can get at under Preferences/Initialization file in X1 IIRC

It sounds like you have the outs setup however so check that your sends are not being directed somewhere that ends up with no output available.

I too have had this problem on EVERY project I work on.  Usually as I go on with my project more and more tracks and busses show this error.

I have checked and checked and everything appears to be properly outputing.  I have chalked it up to a bug and have made the INI setting so that I don't have to be bothered with that stupid error message any longer.

The warning is there to tell you that some send or output in your project is assigned to a bus who's destination is "None"  or that a send or output itself is assigned to None.
We put that warning in some years ago because of frequent user confusion as to why they couldn't hear the output of some tracks or sends. As such it provides a drgree of troubleshooting complex projects.

You can solve it by tracking down the offending send or bus and either removing it or assigning the tracks to something that is not dead. Or you can silence the warning permanently by the ini file. I'm curious what the case is for intentionally assigning something to NONE?
I have thought about force assigning a silent output to "something" but that seems a more risky choice since if a track has something loud on it and its routed to a destination that is a headphone mix for example it could be unpleasant :)

I like it just the way it is now. Please don't change it. It alerts me about where I may have put an out when I had different equipment. I have not run across a false positive.

I do that sometimes when I want a stereo track 'sent' to seperate left and right channels with pre-fade off and the main out is then redundant.

I could assign the redundant main out to something but I normally just leave it set to none and ignore the warning.

These guys here are saying the outs and sends ARE correctly routed though.

I see thanks for clarifying. I doubt its a spurious warning. The check is pretty simple and is determined by checking for any outputs routed to NONE that have tracks or buses that send to it.
If someone has a file that produces this try removing each element one at a time and resave to see which one produces the warning. I've never seen a case where it was not indeed something caused within the project.

I've never had it happen where I hadn't intended it to either, but then I'm not using X1.

I'm curious what the case is for intentionally assigning something to NONE?

I have done this - though rarely - when using a bus specifically for spectral monitoring of multiple tracks with SPAN. IOW, routing signals to a bus for some purpose other than audible output, wherein a plugin is the final destination.

I agree with John and think it's just fine the way it is now. It would be nice, though, if the warning including a checkbox saying "don't tell me again for this project". That would be safer, I think, than a global setting telling it to never warn.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Noel, I think there could be some possible bug going on though. You mention "I'm curious what the case is for intentionally assigning something to NONE?"

In my case, nothing has EVER been set to none. It's the way X1 seems to open things at times. When I have loaded in projects created in 8.5 or older, I get this message every once in a while but it's not something I can (as always lol) reproduce consistently. X1 just seems to open the file goofy at times where it takes those outs as being assigned to "none" when indeed they DO have assignments when open in another version. I use lots of busses and sends etc...each always has a destination, a reason and a purpose...they are never set to "none". Yet X1 will give me that same warning.

The next time I get that message in one of my projects, I'm going to open it like 20 times and see if I can get it to do that. If I can make it happen lets say, every 8 times etc, I'll delete all the audio and resave the project and open it up another 20 times to see if it does it. If it does, I'll pm you with a link to it if you want. This always seems to happen to me with older projects or projects done in X1 that I get from others. I'll do some checking on this and let you know if I find out anything if you want.

I downloaded a mixing template from a user on here, several years ago. That has a "Sub master" buss that uses a "None" output and sends to a left & right buss instead.

Still use it to this day. I don't see a warning though as I use the variable in the ini file mentioned by Johnbouy.

I used to get that message fairly often when X1 first came out. With time and updates it just faded away. I know for a fact that it reported silent outputs that were in fact working well. X1 told me I had a problem but there was no problem, everything worked fine.

I've run into that problem when I've deleted a bus and replaced it with another. No tracks were set to output to "none", but I got the message anyway..  It's rare but I have gotten this. I've learned to think long and hard about creating a buss..!

I get it simply because I was using my interface for recording, and then later, when I unhook everything, and take laptop to listen, or show a friend, it pops up. Not that big a deal to me, but reminds me of what I had set-up prior, am I wrong? Like I said I still am a newbie after 2 yrs. of having Cake products.

You're absolutely correct on this, and........

I have to buy Scott G's book on X1 desperately!

This program is so unlike 8.5.3 it's a bit wierd that we call it "Sonar" at all IMHO.

    Anyway....

I went to the Inspector View and "inspected" my track from which the message originated.
I learned that by pressing one of the two arrows directly under the "Effects Bin" to the left of the word "Send" I could see a representation of the busses assigned to that track and changes that could be made to each on the Bar right below the next level of buttons containing the,  Number of Bus, "Post" On and Off Button, and the "On and Off" button, respectively.
As I clicked these arrows I could see each assigned Effect on the bus.
I continued to click the down arrow and eventually  saw the word "None"!
    Ah Ha!
I changed the "None" to  my Master Bus to the tracks in question , closed and reopened the project and the message was gone!

    Solved!!

    But wait!!

Remember the Number right below the arrows that changes each time you click the arrow that represents the individual Busses created?

    Well.....

It changed until it reached the number 6.  ("so what",  you say?)
Well... I only created "4" Busses!!

Can that be explained as well?? (I'm sure it can)

I hate learning curves that have learning curves!
