Uses for track layers?
What are the uses for track layers? - I saw on one of CW's videos that they used it for drums. Fills were done on a separate track layer - I have read on the forums here that some people use them for multiple takes? Do you do this so that you can choose which take you want to use at mix down? Do you take pieces from different takes to make one really good take? What other uses are there? Thanks

Layers work great for several reasons: 1) They share the EFX bin and illustrate that every track in SONAR is actually a bus. You don't have to set up a bus to enjoy the benfits of bussing if you use the Layers. 2) They are a convenient place to store over dubs or extra takes. Programs made for recording audio have sophisticated ways to store and log and recall extra takes and overdubs... and SONAR has layers. 3) They are great for basic loop recording... not necessarily recording loops but rather actually using the loop record features to loop thru a part for multiple takes. It makes it convenient when you play back because of reasons 1 and 2. 4) They are a great work space to "comp" or composite together a take out of fragments of various performances... and this is because you can enjoy reason 1, 2, and 3 while cutting, dragging and splicing together a composite take. There's probably a few other good things but I can't think of them right now. There are also some terrifically aggravating gotchas and bugs in layers... but let us save those for later because the important thing is to appreciate all the good things you can do with layers. best regards, mike

I like the "mute" tool when I have a track with several vocal takes in it. I can listen to each phrase, and with one swipe, keep the take I like, while it mutes all the other tracks in that time area. It's a CTL click thing or similar... and of course unmutes in the reverse. Totally handy if I have 5 vocal takes. I like to let a vocalist sometimes just go thru the whole song a couple times, especially maybe warming up, and no need NOT to record them too. Or at least go thru all the verses, etc.

Also..If I am doubling something...or just a couple takes of something similar, I'll put them in layers and then just use the clip envelopes for panning and volumes.... if I want them all treated the same, like mentioned above... like a buss. btw, my 7.02 doesn't exhibit layer bugs... just crashes about every 10 hrs or so... My CTL/S is a reflex now!

If your coming from a Protools backround, your gonna find them useless as Protools answer to everything is "add another track, so you can max out your LE system to force you to upgrade"..lol Doing rap and hiphop, the layers work great for comping verses to a single track.

I use them for multiple takes and comping. The mute tool is the only other tool other than the smart tool that I use on a regular basis. Guitar solos & Vocals are the two I find it most useful on, if you had a voice as bad as mine you'd find it useful too.....

Yep, loop recording multiple takes and then comping with the mute tool in track layers is a breeze. Also, it's sometimes handy to have track layers expanded on MIDI tracks, as I STILL haven't gotten a handle on why and when Sonar will sometimes create separate overlapping clips when I edit in the PRV. With track layers open at least it's easy to select and bounce them into one clip.

I am working on something right now where I could use that. Thanks!

i like using the layers to record live drums. i find (because i'm not a great drummer) that i need to record the drums several times. layers allows all the same settings and effects, and i can slice up each of the layers and pick the best fills, sections, etc i've also used them for recording my bass tracks. again, used to record multiple takes and chop them up to make one good one. hope that helps. cheers

I'll loop the track and record multiple guitar solos and pick the best one or comp a few together.. The fact that each preceding take is muted makes it an excellent tool!
